Various Practical Advice

1 Guard your foot when you enter the house of God, and incline your ears to hear rather than to offer the sacrifices of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

2 Do not be rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven, and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few.

3 For dreams come from much busyness, and the voice of a fool from many words.

4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow.

5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the angel that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your voice, so as to destroy the work of your hands?

7 For as in the multitude of dreams there is vanity, so also in many words; but you fear God.

8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor, and violence instead of justice and righteousness, do not marvel at such a thing; for He who is higher than the high ones considers this, and there are higher than they.

9 The profit of the earth is for all; even the king uses the field.

10 He who loves money will never be satisfied with money, and he who loves abundance will never be satisfied with income; this also is vanity.

11 Where wealth increases, there those who eat it increase also. What more profit do the owners have than to see it with their eyes?

12 The sleep of the laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the abundance of the rich does not let him sleep. 

13 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, and it brings on sickness: riches that their owners hoard to their own detriment.

14 For riches themselves are lost by some evil venture; and if a son has one, nothing remains in his hand.

15 As he came from his mother's womb, so naked he will return, going as he came; and he will take nothing of his labor that he can carry away in his hand.

16 This also is an evil that causes sickness: that, inevitably, as he came, so he goes; and what profit is there to him from laboring for the wind?

17 And from having eaten all his days in darkness, and from having suffered much vexation, and sickness, and fierce wrath?

18 Behold, this which I have seen is good and comely: that each one should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toiled under the sun, all the days of his life which God gave him; for this is his portion.

19 And to the man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat them and to take his portion and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.

20 For he will not long remember the days of his life, because God answers him for the joy of his heart.

1 Guarda o teu pé, quando entrares na casa de Deus; e inclina-te mais a ouvir do que a oferecer sacrifícios de tolos, pois não sabem que fazem mal.

2 Não te precipites com a tua boca, nem o teu coração se apresse a pronunciar palavra alguma diante de Deus; porque Deus está nos céus, e tu estás sobre a terra; pelo que sejam poucas as tuas palavras.

3 Porque, da muita ocupação vêm os sonhos, e a voz do tolo da multidão das palavras.

4 Quando a Deus fizeres algum voto, não tardes em cumpri-lo; porque não se agrada de tolos: o que votares, paga-o.

5 Melhor é que não votes do que votes e não pagues.

6 Não consintas que a tua boca faça pecar a tua carne, nem digas diante do anjo que foi erro: por que razão se iraria Deus contra a tua voz, de sorte que destruísse a obra das tuas mãos?

7 Porque, como na multidão dos sonhos há vaidades, assim também nas muitas palavras; mas tu teme a Deus.

8 Se vires em alguma província opressão de pobres, e a violência em lugar do juízo e da justiça, não te maravilhes de semelhante caso; porque o que mais alto é do que os altos para isso atenta; e há mais altos do que eles.

9 O proveito da terra é para todos; até o rei se serve do campo.

10 O que amar o dinheiro nunca se fartará de dinheiro; e quem amar a abundância nunca se fartará da renda: também isto é vaidade.

11 Onde a fazenda se multiplica, aí se multiplicam também os que a comem: que mais proveito pois têm os seus donos do que verem-na com os seus olhos?

12 Doce é o sono do trabalhador, quer coma pouco quer muito; mas a fartura do rico não o deixa dormir.

13 Há mal que vi debaixo do sol, e atrai enfermidades: as riquezas que os seus donos guardam para o seu próprio dano;

14 Porque as mesmas riquezas se perdem por qualquer má aventura; e havendo algum filho nada fica na sua mão.

15 Como saiu do ventre de sua mãe, assim nu voltará, indo-se como veio; e nada tomará do seu trabalho, que possa levar na sua mão.

16 Também isto é um mal que causa enfermidades: que, infalivelmente, como veio, assim ele vai, e que proveito lhe vem de trabalhar para o vento.

17 E de haver comido todos os seus dias nas trevas, e de haver padecido muito enfado, e enfermidades, e cruel furor?

18 Eis aqui o que eu vi, uma boa e bela coisa: comer e beber, e gozar cada um do bem de todo o seu trabalho, em que trabalhou debaixo do sol, todos os dias da sua vida que Deus lhe deu; porque esta é a sua porção.

19 E quanto ao homem, a quem Deus deu riquezas e fazenda, e lhe deu poder para delas comer, e tomar a sua porção, e gozar do seu trabalho: isto é dom de Deus.

20 Porque não se lembrará muito dos dias da sua vida; porquanto Deus lhe responde na alegria do seu coração.

The Evils and Tribulations of Life

1 Then I turned and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun. I saw the tears of those who were oppressed and had no comforter. Strength was on the side of their oppressors, but they had no comforter.

2 Therefore I praised those who have died more than those who are still alive.

3 And better than both is he who is not yet, who has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

4 I also saw that all labor and all skill in works makes a man envy his neighbor. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

5 A fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh.

6 Better is a handful with ease than two hands full with labor and vexation of spirit. 

7 Again I returned and saw vanity under the sun.

8 There is one who is alone and has no second; he has neither son nor sister; yet there is no end to all his labor, nor are his eyes satisfied with riches; and he does not say, 'For whom do I labor, and deprive myself of good?' This also is vanity and a wearying occupation.

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.

10 For if one falls, the other will lift up his companion; but woe to him who is alone! For if he falls, there is no one to lift him up.

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?

12 And if one prevails against one, two can withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. 13 Better is a poor and wise young man than an old and foolish king, who will no longer be admonished.

14 For one comes from prison to reign, even one who was born poor in his kingdom.

15 I have seen all the living walking under the sun with that young man, the successor who will take his place.

16 There is no end to all the people, all those he rules; nor will his descendants rejoice in him. Indeed, this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

1 Depois voltei-me, e atentei para todas as opressões que se fazem debaixo do sol: e eis que vi as lágrimas dos que foram oprimidos e dos que não têm consolador; e a força estava da banda dos seus opressores; mas eles não tinham nenhum consolador.

2 Pelo que eu louvei os que já morreram, mais do que os que vivem ainda.

3 E melhor que uns e outros é aquele que ainda não é; que não viu as más obras que se fazem debaixo do sol.

4 Também vi eu que todo o trabalho, e toda a destreza em obras, traz ao homem a inveja do seu próximo. Também isto é vaidade e aflição de espírito.

5 O tolo cruza as suas mãos, e come a sua própria carne.

6 Melhor é uma mão cheia com descanso do que ambas as mãos cheias com trabalho e aflição de espírito.

7 Outra vez me voltei, e vi vaidade debaixo do sol.

8 Há um que é só, e não tem segundo; sim, ele não tem filho nem irmã; e contudo de todo o seu trabalho não há fim: nem os seus olhos se fartam de riquezas; e não diz: Para quem trabalho eu, privando a minha alma do bem? Também isto é vaidade e enfadonha ocupação.

9 Melhor é serem dois do que um, porque têm melhor paga do seu trabalho.

10 Porque se um cair, o outro levanta o seu companheiro: mas ai do que estiver só; pois, caindo, não haverá outro que o levante.

11 Também, se dois dormirem juntos, eles se aquentarão; mas um só como se aquentará?

12 E, se alguém quiser prevalecer contra um, os dois lhe resistirão; e o cordão de três dobras não se quebra tão depressa.

13 Melhor é o mancebo pobre e sábio do que o rei velho e insensato, que se não deixa mais admoestar.

There is a time for everything, and a season appointed by God.

1 To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven:

2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build up;

4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to leap;

5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6 A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;

7 A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak;

8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

9 What advantage has the worker in what he toils at? 

10 I have seen the toil God has given to the sons of men to afflict them with.

11 He has made everything beautiful in its time; he has also set the world in their hearts, so that no one can find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

12 I have seen that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in their lives.

13 And that everyone should eat and drink and find good in all their labor—this is the gift of God.

14 I know that whatever God does will last forever; nothing can be added to it, nor can anything be taken away from it. God does this so that people fear him.

15 What has been has already been, and what will be has already been; and God demands an account of what has passed.

16 I have seen under the sun: in the place of judgment, wickedness; and in the place of righteousness, wickedness still. 

17 I said in my heart, "God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time for every purpose and for every work."

18 I said in my heart, "It is for the sake of the sons of men, that God may test them, and they may see that they themselves are like animals."

19 For what happens to the sons of men happens to animals; one thing happens to them: as one dies, so dies the other; they all have the same breath; and man has no advantage over animals, for they are all vanity.

20 All go to one place; all are dust, and all return to dust.

21 Who knows that the breath of the sons of men ascends upward, and that the breath of animals descends downward into the earth?

22 Therefore I have seen that there is nothing better than for a man to rejoice in his work, for that is his portion. For who will bring him back to see what will be after him?

12 Já tenho conhecido que não há coisa melhor para eles do que alegrarem-se e fazerem bem na sua vida;

13 E também que todo o homem coma e beba, e goze do bem de todo o seu trabalho: isto é um dom de Deus.

14 Eu sei que tudo quanto Deus faz durará eternamente: nada se lhe deve acrescentar, e nada se lhe deve tirar; e isto faz Deus para que haja temor diante dele.

15 O que é, já foi; e o que há de ser, também já foi; e Deus pede conta do que passou.

16 Vi mais debaixo do sol: no lugar do juízo, impiedade; e no lugar da justiça, impiedade ainda.

17 Eu disse no meu coração: Deus julgará o justo e o ímpio; porque há um tempo para todo o intento e para toda a obra.

18 Disse eu no meu coração: É por causa dos filhos dos homens, para que Deus possa prova-los, e eles possam ver que são em si mesmos como os animais.

19 Porque o que sucede aos filhos dos homens, isso mesmo também sucede aos animais; a mesma coisa lhes sucede: como morre um, assim morre o outro, todos têm o mesmo fôlego; e a vantagem dos homens sobre os animais não é nenhuma, porque todos são vaidade.

20 Todos vão para um lugar: todos são pó, e todos ao pó tornarão.

21 Quem adverte que o fôlego dos filhos dos homens sobe para cima, e que o fôlego dos animais desce para baixo da terra?

Pleasures and Riches Do Not Bring Happiness

1 I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure." But behold, this also was vanity.

2 Of laughter I said, "You are mad!" And of mirth, "What good is this?"

3 I searched in my heart how I might indulge in wine (but ruling my heart with wisdom), and how I might restrain folly, until I might see what would be good for the children of man to do under heaven during the number of the days of their life.

4 I made myself magnificent works: I built myself houses; I planted myself vineyards.

5 I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted in them trees of every kind of fruit.

6 I made myself pools of water to water the grove, wherein the trees were green.

7 I acquired male and female servants, and had servants born in my house; I also had a great possession of herds and flocks, more than all who were before me in Jerusalem.

8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold, and jewels from kings and from the provinces; I provided myself with male and female singers, with the delights of the sons of men, and with musical instruments of all kinds.

9 And I became great and increased more than all who heard before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom also continued with me.

10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not withhold, nor did I withhold my heart from any joy; but my heart rejoiced in all my labor, and this was my portion in all my labor.

11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had toiled to do, and behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. 

12 Then I turned to the consideration of wisdom, madness, and folly. For what will the man who follows the king do? The same as others have done.

13 Then I saw that wisdom excels folly, as light excels darkness.

14 The eyes of the wise are in their heads, but the fool walks in darkness. Then I also understood that the same thing happens to them all.

15 Therefore I said in my heart, "As it happens to the fool, so it will happen to me." Why then did I seek wisdom more? Then I said in my heart, "This also is vanity."

16 For the wise will never be remembered more than the fool, for in the days to come everything will be forgotten. And as the wise die, so dies the fool!

17 Therefore I hated this life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me; yes, all is vanity and a vexation of spirit. 

18 I also hated all my labor in which I toiled under the sun, because I would have to leave it to the man who would come after me.

19 And who knows whether he will be wise or foolish? Yet he will have dominion over all my labor in which I toiled, and in which I have shown myself wisely under the sun; this also is vanity.

20 Therefore I have set my heart on despairing of all the labor in which I have toiled under the sun.

21 For there is a man whose labor is done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet to a man who has not labored at it, he will leave it as his portion; this also is vanity and great grief.

22 For what has a man more of all his labor and the toil of his heart in which he labors under the sun?

23 For all his days are sorrow, and his toil is grief; even at night his heart is at rest. This also is vanity.

24 Is it not good for a man to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in his labor? This also I have seen from the hand of God.

25 (For who can eat, or who can enjoy more than I?)

26 For to a man who is good in his sight, God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives labor, to gather and heap up, and to give to the good in his sight. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

2 Do riso disse: Está doido; e da alegria: De que serve esta?

3 Busquei no meu coração como me daria ao vinho (regendo porém o meu coração com sabedoria), e como reterei a loucura, até ver o que seria melhor que os filhos dos homens fizessem debaixo do céu, durante o número dos dias de sua vida.

4 Fiz para mim obras magníficas: edifiquei para mim casas: plantei para mim vinhas.

5 Fiz para mim hortas e jardins, e plantei neles árvores de toda a espécie de fruto.

6 Fiz para mim tanques de águas, para regar com eles o bosque em que reverdeciam as árvores.

7 Adquiri servos e servas, e tive servos nascidos em casa; também tive grande possessão de vacas e ovelhas, mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém.

8 Amontoei também para mim prata e ouro, e jóias de reis e das províncias; provi-me de cantores e cantoras, e das delícias dos filhos dos homens, e de instrumentos de música de toda a sorte.

9 E engrandeci-me, e aumentei mais do que todos os que ouve antes de mim em Jerusalém: perseverou também comigo a minha sabedoria.

10 E tudo quanto desejaram os meus olhos não lho neguei, nem privei o meu coração de alegria alguma; mas o meu coração se alegrou por todo o meu trabalho, e esta foi a minha porção de todo o meu trabalho.

11 E olhei eu para todas as obras que fizeram as minhas mãos, como também para o trabalho que eu, trabalhando, tinha feito, e eis que tudo era vaidade e aflição de espírito, e que proveito nenhum havia debaixo do sol.

12 Então passei à contemplação da sabedoria, e dos desvarios, e da doidice; porque, que fará o homem que seguir ao rei? O mesmo que outros já fizeram;

13 Então vi eu que a sabedoria é mais excelente do que a estultícia, quanto a luz é mais excelente do que as trevas.

14 Os olhos do sábio estão na sua cabeça, mas o louco anda em trevas: também então entendi eu que o mesmo lhes sucede a todos.

15 Pelo que eu disse no meu coração: Como acontece ao tolo, assim me sucederá a mim; por que então busquei eu mais a sabedoria? Então disse no meu coração que também isto era vaidade.

16 Porque nunca haverá mais lembrança do sábio do que do tolo; porquanto de tudo nos dias futuros total esquecimento haverá. E como morre o sábio, assim morre o tolo!

17 Pelo que aborreci esta vida, porque a obra que se faz debaixo do sol me era penosa; sim, tudo é vaidade e aflição de espírito.

18 Também eu aborreci todo o meu trabalho, em que trabalhei debaixo do sol, visto como eu havia de deixa-lo ao homem que viesse depois de mim.

19 E quem sabe se será sábio ou tolo? Contudo, ele se assenhoreará de todo o meu trabalho em que trabalhei, e em que me houve sabiamente debaixo do sol; também isto é vaidade.

20 Pelo que eu me apliquei a fazer que o meu coração perdesse a esperança de todo o trabalho, em que trabalhei debaixo do sol.

21 Porque há homem cujo trabalho é feito com sabedoria, e ciência, e destreza; contudo, a um homem que não trabalhou nele, o deixará como porção sua; também isto é vaidade e grande enfado.

22 Porque, que mais tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho, e da fadiga do seu coração, em que ele anda trabalhando debaixo do sol?

23 Porque todos os seus dias são dores, e a sua ocupação é desgosto; até de noite não descansa o seu coração: Também isto é vaidade.

24 Não é pois bom para o homem que coma e beba, e que faça gozar a sua alma do bem do seu trabalho? Isto também eu vi que vem da mão de Deus.

25 (Porque quem pode comer, ou quem pode gozar melhor do que eu?)

26 Porque o homem que é bom diante dele, dá Deus sabedoria e conhecimento e alegria; mas ao pecador dá trabalho, para que ele ajunte, e amontoe, e o dê ao bom perante a sua face. Também isto é vaidade e aflição de espírito.

5 सूर्य उदय होता है, अस्त होता है, और अपने स्थान पर लौट जाता है जहाँ से वह उदय हुआ था।

6 वायु दक्षिण की ओर जाती है, और उत्तर की ओर मुड़ जाती है; वायु चारों ओर घूमती रहती है।

7 सभी नदियाँ समुद्र में मिलती हैं, फिर भी समुद्र भर नहीं जाता; नदियाँ जहाँ जाती हैं, वहीं लौट जाती हैं।

The Vanity of All Earthly Things

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

2 Vanity of vanities! says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! It is all vanity.

3 What profit has man from all his labor which he does under the sun?

4 One generation passes away, and another generation comes, but the earth abides forever.

5 The sun rises, and the sun sets, and returns to its place where it arose.

6 The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north; the wind whirls around and around.

7 All the rivers run into the sea, and yet the sea is not full; to the place where the rivers go, there they return.

8 All these things are so weary that no one can declare them: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing. 

9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done will be done again; so that there is nothing new under the sun.

10 Is there anything of which one can say, 'See, this is new'? It was in the ages that were before us.

11 There is no longer any remembrance of the things that were before, and of the things that will be, there will be no remembrance in those who come after.

12 I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 I applied my heart to search and to search by wisdom all that is done under heaven: this tiresome occupation has God given to the sons of men to be exercised with.

14 I have looked at all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight; that which is lacking cannot be counted. 

16 I spoke in my heart, saying, "Behold, I have become great, and have surpassed in wisdom all who were before me in Jerusalem; indeed, my heart has abundantly seen wisdom and knowledge."

17 I applied my heart to know wisdom and to understand madness and folly, and I realized that this also is vexation of spirit.

18 For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases in knowledge increases in travail.

3 Que vantagem tem o homem, de todo o seu trabalho, que ele faz debaixo do sol?

4 Uma geração vai, e outra geração vem; mas a terra para sempre permanece.

5 E nasce o sol, e põe-se o sol, e volta ao seu lugar donde nasceu.

6 O vento vai para o sul, e faz o seu giro para o norte; continuamente vai girando o vento, e volta fazendo os seus circuitos.

7 Todos os ribeiros vão para o mar e contudo o mar não se enche; para o lugar para onde os ribeiros vão, para aí tornam eles a ir.

15 Aquilo que é torto não se pode endireitar; aquilo que falta não pode ser calculado.

16 Falei eu com o meu coração, dizendo: Eis que eu me engrandeci, e sobrepujei em sabedoria a todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém: na verdade, o meu coração contemplou abundantemente a sabedoria e a ciência.

17 E apliquei o meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria e a conhecer os desvarios e as loucuras, e vim a saber que também isto era aflição de espírito.

18 Porque na muita sabedoria há muito enfado; e o que aumenta em ciência, aumenta em trabalho.

1 The words of King Lemuel: the prophecy his mother taught him.

2 How, my son? And how, O son of my womb? And how, O son of my promises?

3 Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to the destroyer of kings.

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes to desire strong drink.

5 Lest they drink and forget the statute, and pervert the judgment of all the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink to those who perish, and wine to those who are bitter in spirit;

7 So that they drink and forget their poverty, and you remember their toil no more. 

8 Open your mouth for the dumb, for the justice of all who are desolate.

9 Open your mouth; judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? Her value is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and she lacks no wealth.

13 She seeks wool and flax, and works willingly with her hands.

14 She is like a merchant ship: she brings her food from afar.

15 She rises while it is still night, and gives food to her household, and a portion to her maidservants.

25 Strength and glory are her clothing, and she laughs at the coming day.

28 Her children rise up and call her blessed, and her husband also praises her, saying,

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but you surpass them all.

30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

11 O coração de seu marido está nela confiado, e a ela nenhuma fazenda faltará.

12 Ela lhe faz bem, e não mal, todos os dias da sua vida.

13 Busca lã e linho, e trabalha de boa vontade com as suas mãos.

14 É como o navio mercante: de longe traz o seu pão.

15 Ainda de noite se levanta, e dá mantimento à sua casa, e a tarefa às servas.

16 Examina uma herdade, e adquire-a: planta uma vinha com o fruto de suas mãos.

17 Cinge os seus lombos de força e fortalece os seus braços.

18 Prova e vê que é boa a sua mercadoria; e a sua lâmpada não se apaga de noite.

19 Estende as suas mãos ao fuso, e as palmas das suas mãos pegam na roca.

20 Abre a sua mão ao aflito; e ao necessitado estende as suas mãos.

21 Não temerá, por causa da neve, porque toda a sua casa anda forrada de roupa dobrada.

22 Faz para si tapeçaria; de linho fino e de púrpura é o seu vestido.

23 Conhece-se o seu marido nas portas, quando se assenta com os anciãos da terra.

24 Faz panos de linho fino, e vende-os e dá cinta aos mercadores.

25 A força e a glória são os seus vestidos, e ri-se do dia futuro.

26 Abre a sua boca com sabedoria, e a lei da beneficência está na sua língua.

27 Olha pelo governo de sua casa, e não come o pão da preguiça.

28 Levantam-se seus filhos, e chamam-na bem-aventurada, como também seu marido, que a louva, dizendo:

29 Muitas filhas obraram virtuosamente; mas tu a todas és superior.

30 Enganosa é a graça e vaidade a formosura, mas a mulher que teme ao Senhor, essa será louvada.

4 कौन स्वर्ग पर चढ़ा या उतरा है? किसने हवाओं को अपनी मुट्ठियों में समेटा है? किसने जल को अपने वस्त्र में बाँधा है? किसने पृथ्वी के सब छोरों को स्थिर किया है? उसका नाम क्या है, और उसके पुत्र का नाम क्या है, यदि तुम उसे जानते हो?

5 परमेश्वर का एक-एक वचन शुद्ध है; वह उन लोगों के लिए ढाल है जो उस पर भरोसा रखते हैं।

10 अपने दास की उसके स्वामी से निन्दा न करो, कहीं ऐसा न हो कि वह तुम्हें शाप दे, और तुम पर इसका दोष लगे।

11 एक पीढ़ी ऐसी भी है जो अपने पिता को शाप देती है और अपनी माता को आशीर्वाद नहीं देती।

12 एक पीढ़ी ऐसी भी है जो अपनी दृष्टि में पवित्र है, और अपनी मलिनता से धुलती नहीं।

13 एक पीढ़ी ऐसी भी है जिसकी आँखें घमण्ड से भरी हैं, और जिसकी पलकें ऊपर उठी हुई हैं।

14 एक पीढ़ी ऐसी भी है जिसके दाँत तलवारों के समान और जबड़े छुरियों के समान हैं, कि वे दीन-दुखियों को पृथ्वी पर से, और दरिद्रों को मनुष्यों में से फाड़ डालें।

15 जोंक की दो बेटियाँ होती हैं: दे, दे। ये तीन कभी तृप्त नहीं होतीं, और चार कभी नहीं कहतीं, "बस।"

16 कब्र, बांझ गर्भ, जल से तृप्त न होनेवाली भूमि और अग्नि कभी नहीं कहते, "बस।"

17 जो आँखें पिता का उपहास करती हैं, या माता की आज्ञाकारिता को तुच्छ जानती हैं, उन्हें नदी के कौवे नोच लेंगे, और युवा उकाब उन्हें खा जाएँगे।

18 तीन बातें मेरे लिए बहुत ही अद्भुत हैं, और चार मैं नहीं जानता:

19 आकाश में उकाब का मार्ग; चट्टान पर साँप का मार्ग; समुद्र के बीच जहाज का मार्ग; और कुंवारी के साथ पुरुष का मार्ग।

20 व्यभिचारिणी स्त्री का मार्ग भी ऐसा ही है: वह खाती है, और अपना मुँह पोंछती है, और कहती है, "मैंने कोई बुरा काम नहीं किया।"

21 तीन बातों के कारण पृथ्वी घबरा जाती है, और चार बातें वह सह नहीं सकती:

The Words of Agur

1 The words of Agur, the son of Jakeh, the oracle. This man said to Ithiel, to Ithiel and to Ucal:

2 Surely I am more brutish than anyone; I have no understanding of man.

3 I have neither learned wisdom, nor have I the knowledge of the Holy One.

4 Who has ascended into heaven or descended? Who has gathered the winds in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if you know it?

5 Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to those who trust in him.

6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

7 Two things have I asked of you; do not deny me before I die:

8 Remove from me vanity and lying words; Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my accustomed portion.

9 Lest when I am full I deny you and say, 'Who is the Lord?' Or when I become poor I steal and take advantage of the name of my God.

10 Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held accountable.

11 There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.

12 There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, and is not washed from its filthiness.

13 There is a generation whose eyes are haughty, and whose eyelids are lifted up.

14 There is a generation whose teeth are like swords and whose jawbones are like knives, to devour the afflicted from the earth, the needy from among men.

15 The leech has two daughters: Give, Give. These three are never satisfied, and four never say, "Enough."

16 The grave, the barren womb, the ground that is not satisfied with water, and fire never say, "Enough."

17 The eyes that mock a father, or despise a mother's obedience, the ravens of the brook will pick them out, and the young eagles will eat them.

18 There are three things that are too wonderful for me, and four I do not know:

19 The way of an eagle in the sky; the way of a serpent on a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a virgin.

20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, "I have done no wrong."

21 For three things the earth is in dismay, and four it cannot bear:

22 For a servant when he reigns; and for a fool when he is full of bread;

23 For a hated woman when she marries; and by a maidservant when she becomes heir to her mistress.

24 These four are among the smallest on earth, yet they are wise, full of wisdom:

25 The ants are a powerless people, yet they prepare their food in the summer;

26 The conies are a feeble people, yet they make their home in the rocks;

27 The locusts have no king; yet they all go forth and scatter in flocks;

28 The spider catches with its hands, and is in kings' palaces.

29 There are three that have a good gait, and the fourth walks very well:

30 The lion, the strongest among the beasts, whom no one turns back for;

31 The war horse, with its loins well girded; and the goat also; and the king who cannot be resisted.

32 If you have acted foolishly in exalting yourself, or if you have imagined evil, put your hand on your mouth. 

33 For the pressing of milk brings forth butter, and the pressing of the nose brings forth blood, and the pressing of anger brings forth strife.

1 Palavras de Agur, filho de Jaque, o oráculo. Disse este varão a Itiel; a Itiel e a Ucal:

2 Na verdade que eu sou mais bruto do que ninguém; não tenho entendimento do homem.

3 Nem aprendi a sabedoria, nem tenho o conhecimento do Santo.

4 Quem subiu ao céu e desceu? Quem encerrou os ventos nos seus punhos? Quem amarrou as águas na sua roupa? Quem estabeleceu todas as extremidades da terra? Qual é o seu nome, e qual é o nome de seu filho, se é que o sabes?

5 Toda a palavra de Deus é pura; escudo é para os que confiam nele.

6 Nada acrescentes às suas palavras, para que não te repreenda e sejas achado mentiroso.

7 Duas coisas te pedi: não mas negues, antes que morra:

8 Afasta de mim a vaidade e a palavra mentirosa; não me dês nem a pobreza nem a riqueza: mantém-me do pão da minha porção acostumada;

9 Para que porventura de farto te não negue, e diga: Quem é o Senhor? Ou que, empobrecendo, não venha a furtar, e lance mão do nome de Deus.

10 Não calunies o servo diante de seu senhor, para que te não amaldiçoe e fiques culpado.

11 Há uma geração que amaldiçoa a seu pai, e que não bendiz a sua mãe.

12 Há uma geração que é pura aos seus olhos, e que nunca foi lavada da sua imundícia.

13 Há uma geração cujos olhos são altivos, e cujas pálpebras são levantadas para cima.

14 Há uma geração cujos dentes são espadas, e cujos queixais são facas, para consumirem na terra os aflitos, e os necessitados entre os homens.

15 A sanguessuga tem duas filhas, a saber: Dá, Dá. Estas três coisas nunca se fartam; e quatro nunca dizem: Basta.

16 A sepultura, a madre estéril, a terra que se não farta d’água; e o fogo, nunca dizem: Basta.

17 Os olhos que zombam do pai, ou desprezam a obediência da mãe, corvos do ribeiro os arrancarão e os pintãos da águia os comerão.

18 Há três coisas que me maravilham; e a quarta não a conheço:

19 O caminho da águia no céu; o caminho da cobra na penha; o caminho do navio no meio do mar; e o caminho do homem com uma virgem.

20 Tal é o caminho da mulher adúltera: ela come, e limpa a sua boca, e diz: Não cometi maldade.

21 Por três coisas se alvoroça a terra, e a quarta não a pode suportar:

22 Pelo servo, quando reina; e pelo tolo, quando anda farto de pão:

23 Pela mulher aborrecida, quando se casa; e pela serva, quando fica herdeira da sua senhora.

24 Estas quatro coisas são das mais pequenas da terra, mas sábias, bem providas de sabedoria:

25 As formigas são um povo impotente; todavia no verão preparam a sua comida;

26 Os coelhos são um povo débil; e contudo fazem a sua casa nas rochas;

27 Os gafanhotos não tem rei; e contudo todos saem, e em bandos se repartem;

28 A aranha apanha com as mãos, e está nos paços dos reis.

29 Há três que têm um bom andar, e o quarto passeia muito bem:

30 O leão, o mais forte entre os animais, que por ninguém torna atrás:

31 O cavalo de guerra, bem cingido pelos lombos: e o bode também: e o rei a quem se não pode resistir.

32 Se obraste loucamente, elevando-te, e se imaginaste o mal, põe a mão na boca.

33 Porque o espremer do leite produz manteiga, e o espremer do nariz produz sangue, e o espremer da ira produz contenda.
