Job 24
Job argues that the wicked often go unpunished in this life
Since times are not hidden from the Almighty, why do those who know him not see his days?
They even remove the boundaries; they steal the flocks and feed them.
They seize the fatherless' donkey; they take the widow's ox as a pledge.
They turn the needy out of the way; the poor of the land hide themselves together.
Behold, they go forth like wild donkeys in the wilderness to their work, rising early for the prey; the bare ground yields food for them and their children.
They mow their pasture in the field, and gather the grapes of the wicked.
They make the naked spend the night naked, so that he has no covering against the cold.
They make the naked spend the night without clothing, so that he has no covering against the cold. 8 They are wetted by the mountain streams, and, having no shelter, they embrace the rocks.
They tear the fatherless from the bosom, and take the pledge of the poor.
They make the naked go naked, and take the ears of the hungry.
They make oil within their walls; they tread the presses, and yet they thirst.
Men groan from the cities, and the soul of the wounded cries out, yet God does not count it as madness.
They are among those who resist the light; they do not know its ways, nor abide in its paths.
The murderer rises early in the morning and kills the poor and needy, and in the night he is like a thief.
As the eyes of an adulterer wait for the twilight, saying, "No eye will see me," and he hides his face.
In the darkness they undermine the houses that they marked out by day; they know not the light.
For the morning is to them all as the shadow of death; for when they are known, they fear the shadow of death.
He is swift upon the face of the waters; cursed is his portion upon the earth; he does not return by the way of the vineyards.
Drought and heat make the waters of the snow vanish; so the grave will destroy those who have sinned.
The womb will forget him, the worms will eat him with delight; he will be remembered no more, and iniquity will be broken like a tree.
He afflicts the barren woman who does not bear, and does no good to the widow;
He drags away even the mighty with his strength; if he rises, there is no safety.
If God gives them rest, they lean on it; but his eyes are on their ways.
For a little while they rise up, and then they are gone; They are slaughtered, enclosed like all the others, and cut off like the tops of the ears of corn.
If it is not so now, who will contradict me and defeat my words?
