13 So Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, Blessed are you of the Lord; I performed the word of the Lord.

14 Then Samuel said, "How is it that my sheep are bleating in my ears, and the lowing of cows that I hear?"

15 And Saul said, They brought them from Amalek: because the people forgave the best of the sheep and the cows, to offer them to the Lord your God: the rest, however, we have completely destroyed.

16 Then Samuel said to Saul, "Wait, and I will tell you what the Lord said to me tonight." And he said to him: Speak.

17 And Samuel said, Perhaps you were small in your eyes, and you were not the head of the tribes of Israel? and the Lord has anointed you king over Israel.

18 And the Lord sent you on this path, and said, Go, and utterly destroy these sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them, until they annihilate them.

19 Why then did you not listen to the voice of the Lord, but flew to the spoil, and did what seemed evil in the eyes of the Lord?

20 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I heard the voice of the Lord first, and walked in the way the Lord sent me; and brought to Agag the king of Amalek, and the Amalekites I utterly destroyed;

22 But Samuel said, Does the Lord have as much pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying his word from the Lord? behold, obeying is better than sacrificing; and to serve it better than sheep fat.

23 For rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft, and to preach is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you, lest you be king.

24 Then Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned because I have pierced the saying of the Lord and your words: because I feared the people and listened to his voice.

25 Now therefore, I beseech thee, forgive me my sin: and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.

26 But Samuel said to Saul, I will not return with you: because you have rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has already rejected you, lest you be king over Israel.

War between the Israelites and the Philistines

1 One year Saul had been in his reign: and the second year he reigned over Israel.

2 So Saul chose three thousand Israel for himself; and two thousand were with Saul in Micmas, and in the mountain of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and he sent the rest of the people away, each one to his house.

3 And Jonathan struck down the Philistines' garrison at Gibeah, which the Philistines heard: so Saul blew the trumpet throughout the land, saying, Hear the Hebrews.

4 Then all Israel heard it said, Saul smote the garrison of the Philistines, and Israel also became an abomination to the Philistines. So the people were called after Saul in Gilgal.

5 And the Philistines came together to fight against Israel: Thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and the people in multitude like the sand that is at the edge of the sea; and they went up and camped at Micmash, east of Beth-Aven.

6 And when the men of Israel saw that they were in anguish (because the people were cramped), the people hid themselves by the caves, and by the spines, and by the cliffs, and by the fortifications and the pits.

7 And the Hebrews passed over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead: and while Saul was still in Gilgal, all the people came after him trembling.

Guerra entre os israelitas e os filisteus

1 Um ano tinha estada Saul em seu reinado: e o segundo ano reinou sobre Israel.

2 Então Saul escolheu para si três mil de Israel; e estavam com Saul dois mil em Micmas, e na montanha de Betel, e mil estavam com Jônatas em Gibeá de Benjamim: e despediu o resto do povo, cada um para a sua casa.

3 E Jônatas feriu a guarnição dos filisteus que estava em Gibeá, o que os filisteus ouviram: pelo que Saul tocou a trombeta por toda a terra, dizendo: Ouçam hebreus.

4 Então todo o Israel ouviu dizer: Saul feriu a guarnição dos filisteus, e também Israel se fez abominável aos filisteus. Então o povo foi convocado após Saul em Gilgal.

5 E os filisteus se ajuntaram para pelejar contra Israel: Trinta mil carros, e seis mil cavaleiros, e o povo em multidão como a areia que está à borda do mar; e subiram, e se acamparam em Micmás, ao oriente de Bete-Aven.

6 Vendo pois os homens de Israel que estavam em angústia ( porque o povo estava apertado) o povo se escondeu pelas cavernas, e pelos espinhais, e pelos penhascos, e pelas fortificações e pelas covas.

7 E os hebreus passaram o Jordão para a terra de Gade e Gileade: e, estando Saul ainda em Gilgal, todo o povo veio atrás dele tremendo.
