Saul seeks the lost donkeys and goes to Samuel

1 And there was a man from Benjamin, whose name was Kish, son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Bevorat, son of Aphia, son of a man of Benjamin: man encouraged by strength.

2 He had a son, whose name was Saul, a young man, and so beautiful that among the children of Israel there was no other man more beautiful than he; from the shoulders up he stood out from the crowd.

3 And the donkeys of Kish the father of Saul were lost; so he said to his son Saul, "Now take one of the boys with you, and get up and go and get the donkeys."

4 So he passed through the mountain of Ephraim, and from there he passed into the land of Salisa, but they did not find them: afterwards they passed into the land of Saalim, but neither were they there; he also passed on to the land of Benjamin, but neither did they find them.

5 When they came to Sufe Saul's land, he said to his young man, with whom he was going, Come, and let us return; so that my father may not stop worrying about the donkeys and grieve because of us.

6 But he said to him, "Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and an honorable man is: whatever he says, it unfails so. Let's go there now; perhaps it will show us the way we must go.

7 Then Saul said to his boy, "Behold, however, if we go there, what will we then take to that man?" Because the bread in our Pouches has run out, and we have no gift to take to the man of God: what do we have?

8 And the young man answered Saul again, and said, Behold, a quarter of a silver shekel is still in my hand, which I will give to the man of God, that he may show us the way.

9 (Formerly in Israel, when anyone went to consult God, he said: Come, and let's go to the seer: because today's prophet used to be called seer)

10 Then Saul said to the young man, You say well; therefore, come on. And they went to the city where the man of God was.

11 And as they went up the hill, they found some girls who went out to draw water; and they said to them, Is the seer here?

12 And they answered them, and said, Yes, behold, here he is before you: therefore hurry, because today he came to the city; because the people today have sacrifice on high.

13 As you enter the city, you will soon find it, before it goes up to the top to eat; because the people will not eat until he comes; because he is the one who blesses the sacrifice, and then the guests eat: go up now, that you will find him today.

14 So they went up to the city: and when they came into the city, behold, Samuel went out to meet them, to go up on high.

15 For the Lord had revealed it to Samuel, the day before Saul came, saying,

16 At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, whom you will anoint as captain over my people Israel, and he will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines: because I have looked on my people, because the outcry has come to me.

17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, Here is the man of whom I have already told you. This will rule over my people.

18 And Saul approached Samuel in the middle of the door and said, "Show me, I beg you, where is the seer's house here."

19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me on high, and eat with me today; and in the morning I will send you away, and I will declare everything in your heart.

20 And as for the donkeys that were lost to you three days ago, do not occupy your heart with them, because they are already found. And for whom is all Israel's desire? is it not for you, and for all your father's house?

21 Then Saul answered and said, Am I not the son of Benjamin, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family, the smallest of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you speak to me in similar words?

22 But Samuel took Saul and his boy, and took them into the chamber; and he gave them a place above all the guests, who were about thirty men.

23 Then Samuel said to the cook, Give me the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, Put it aside with you.

24 So the cook lifted up his shoulder, with what was in it, and set it before Saul: and Samuel said, Behold, this is the leftover; put it before you, and eat; because it was kept for you for this occasion, saying, I have invited the people. So Saul ate that day with Samuel.

25 Then they went down from above to the city; and spoke to Saul about the roof.

26 And they got up at dawn; And it came to pass, when Samuel was about to rise, that he called Saul to the roof, saying, Arise, and I will send you away. Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went out.

27 And when they came down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Tell the boy to pass before us: (and he passed) but you wait now, and I will make you hear the word of God.

1 E havia um homem de Benjamim, cujo o nome era Quis, filho de Abiel, filho de Zeror, filho de Bevorate, filho de Afia, filho de um homem de Benjamim: varão alentado em força.

2 Este tinha um filho, cujo nome era Saul, mancebo, e tão belo que entre os filhos de Israel não havia outro homem mais belo do que ele; desde os ombros para cima sobressaía a todo o povo.

3  E perderam-se as jumentas de Quis pai de Saul; pelo que disse Quis a Saul, seu filho: Toma agora contigo um dos moços, e levanta-te e vai a buscar as jumentas.

4 Passou pois pela montanha de Efraim, e dali passou à terra de Salisa, porém não as acharam: depois passaram à terra de Saalim, porém tão pouco estavam ali; também passou à terra de Benjamim, porém tão pouco as acharam.

5 Vindo então eles à terra de Sufe Saul disse para o seu moço, com quem ele ia: Vem, e voltemos; para que porventura meu pai não deixe de inquietar-se pelas jumentas e se aflija por causa de nós.

6 Porém ele lhe disse: Eis que há nesta cidade um homem de Deus, e homem honrado é: tudo quanto diz, sucede assim infalivelmente.  Vamo-nos agora lá; porventura nos mostrará o caminho que devemos seguir.

7 Então Saul disse ao seu moço: Eis, porém, se lá formos, que levaremos então àquele homem? Porque o pão de nossos Alforges se acabou, e presente nenhum temos que levar ao homem de Deus: que temos?

8 E o moço tornou a responder a Saul, e disse: Eis que ainda se acha na minha mão um quarto de um siclo de prata, o qual darei ao homem de Deus, para que nos mostre o caminho.

9 ( Antigamente em Israel, indo qualquer consultar a Deus dizia assim: Vinde, e vamos ao vidente: porque ao profeta de hoje antigamente se chamava vidente)

10 Então disse Saul ao moço: Bem dizes; vem, pois, vamos. E foram-se à cidade onde estava o homem de Deus.

11 E, subindo eles pela subida da cidade, acharam umas moças que saíam a tirar água; e disseram-lhes: Está cá o vidente?

12 E elas lhes responderam, e disseram: Sim, eis aqui o tens diante de ti: apressa-te pois, porque hoje veio à cidade; porquanto o povo tem hoje sacrifício no alto.

13 Entrando vós na cidade, logo o achareis, antes que suba ao alto para comer; porque o povo não comerá, até que ele venha; porque ele é o que abençoa o sacrifício, e depois comem os convidados: subi pois agora, que hoje o achareis.

14 Subiram pois à cidade: e, vindo eles no meio da cidade, eis que Samuel lhes saiu ao encontro, para subir ao alto.

15 Porque o Senhor o revelara aos ouvidos de Samuel, um dia antes que Saul viesse, dizendo:

16 Amanhã a estas horas te enviarei um homem da terra de Benjamim, o qual ungirás por capitão, sobre o meu povo de Israel, e ele livrará o meu povo da mão dos filisteus: porque tenho olhado para o meu povo, porque o clamor chegou a mim.

17  E quando Samuel viu a Saul, o Senhor lhe disse: Eis aqui o homem de quem já te tenho dito. Este dominará sobre o meu povo.

18 E Saul se chegou a Samuel no meio da porta, e disse: Mostra-me, peço-te, onde está aqui a casa do vidente.

19 E Samuel respondeu a Saul, e disse: Eu sou o vidente: sobe diante de mim ao alto, e comei hoje comigo; e pela manhã te despedirei, e tudo quanto está no teu coração, to declararei.

20 E quanto às jumentas que há três dias se te perderam, não ocupes o teu coração com elas, porque jà se acharam. E para quem é todo o desejo de Israel? porventura não é para ti, e para toda a casa de teu pai?

21 Então respondeu Saul, e disse: Porventura não sou eu filho de Benjamim, da mais pequena das tribos de Israel? E a minha família a mais pequena de todas as famílias da tribo de Benjamim? Por que pois me falas com semelhantes palavras?

22 Porém Samuel tomou a Saul e ao seu moço, e os levou à câmara; e deu-lhes lugar acima de todos os convidados, que eram uns trinta homens.

23 Então disse Samuel ao cozinheiro: Dá cá a porção que te dei, de que te disse: Põe-na à parte contigo.

24 Levantou pois o cozinheiro a espádua, com o que havia nela, e pô-la diante de Saul: e disse Samuel: Eis que isto é o sobejo; põe-no diante de ti, e come; porque se guardou para ti para esta ocasião, dizendo eu: Tenho convidado o povo. Assim comeu Saul aquele dia com Samuel.

25 Então desceram do alto para a cidade; e falou com Saul sobre o eirado.

26 E se levantaram de madrugada; e sucedeu que, quase ao subir da alva, chamou Samuel a Saul ao eirado, dizendo: Levanta-te, e despedir-te-ei. Levantou-se Saul, e saíram para fora ambos, ele e Samuel.

27 E, descendo eles para a extremidade da cidade, Samuel disse a Saul: Dize ao moço que passe adiante de nós: ( e passou) porém tu espera agora, e te farei ouvir a palavra de Deus.

The Israelites ask for a king and God grants him

1 And it came to pass that, when Samuel had aged, he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 And it was the name of his eldest son Joel, and the name of his second son Abia: and they were judges in Beersheba.

3 But his sons did not walk in his ways, but bowed to avarice, and took gifts, and perverted the judgment.

4 Then all the elders of Israel came together, and came to Samuel, to Ramah,

5 And they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your children do not walk in your ways: therefore make us a king over us now, that he may judge us, as all nations have.

6 But these words seemed evil to Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to the Lord.

7 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hear the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but have rejected me so that I would not reign over them.

8 As all the works have done from the day I brought them out of Egypt to this day, for they have left me, and other gods have served, so have they done to you.

9 Now therefore, hear his voice, but protest to them solemnly, and declare to them what will be the custom of the king who will reign over them.

10 And Samuel spoke all the words of the Lord to the people, who asked him for a king.

11 And he said, This will be the custom of the king who will reign over you: he will take your children, and employ him for his chariots, and for his horsemen, so that they may run ahead of his chariots.

12 And he will make them for princes of thousands and for fifty years; and that they may plow their fields, and follow their harvest, and make their weapons of war and the equipment of their chariots.

13 And he will take his daughters for perfumers, cooks, and bakers.

14 And he will take the best of your lands, and of vineyards, and of your olive groves, and give them to his servants.

15 And he will decimate your seeds, and your vineyards, to give to his eunuchs and his servants.

16 Your servants, and your servants, and your best young men, and your asses, he will take, and use them in his work.

17 he will decimate your flock, and you will serve him as servants.

18 Then on that day you will cry out for the king, that you have chosen; but the Lord will not hear you that day.

19 But the people did not want to hear Samuel's voice; and they said, No, there will be a king over us.

20 And we too will be like all other nations; and our king will judge us, and he will come out before us, and make our wars.

21 And when Samuel heard all the words of the people, he spoke them before the ears of the Lord.

22 Then the Lord said to Samuel, Give ear to the voice, make them king. Then Samuel said to the children of Israel, Let each one go to his city.

1 E sucedeu que, tendo Samuel envelhecido, constitui a seus filhos por juízes sobre Israel.

2 E era o nome de seu filho primogênito Joel, e o nome  do seu segundo filho Abia: e foram juízes em Berseba.

3 Porém seus filhos não andaram pelos caminhos dele, antes se inclinaram à avareza, e tomaram presentes, e perverteram o juízo.

4 Então todos os anciãos de Israel se congregaram, e vieram a Samuel, a Ramá,

5 E disseram-lhe: Eis que já estás velho, e teus filhos não andam pelos teus caminhos: constitui-nos pois, agora um rei sobre nós, para que ele nos julgue, como o têm todas as nações.

6 Porém estas palavras pareceu mal aos olhos de Samuel, quando disseram: Dá-nos um rei, para que nos julgue. E Samuel orou ao Senhor.

7 E disse o Senhor a Samuel: Ouve a voz do povo em tudo quanto te disserem, pois não te têm rejeitado a ti, antes a mim me têm rejeitado para eu não reinar sobre eles.

8 Conforme todas as obras fizeram desde o dia em que os tirei do Egito até ao dia de hoje, pois a mim me deixaram, e a outros deuses serviram, assim também te fizeram a ti.

9 Agora, pois, ouve a sua voz, porém protesta-lhes solenemente, e declara-lhes qual será o costume do rei que houver de reinar sobre eles.

10 E falou Samuel todas as palavras do Senhor ao povo, que lhe pedia um rei.

11 E disse: Este será o costume do rei que houver de reinar sobre vós: ele tomará os vossos filhos, e o empregará para os seus carros, e para seus cavaleiros, para que corram adiante dos seus carros.

12 E os porá por príncipes de milhares e por cinqüentenários; e para que lavrem a sua lavoura, e seguem a sua sega, e façam as suas armas de guerra e os apetrechos de seus carros.

13 E tomará as suas filhas para perfumistas, cozinheiras, e padeiras.

14 E tomará o melhor de vossas terras, e das vinhas, e do vossos olivais, e os dará aos seus criados.

15 E as vossas sementes, e as vossas vinhas dizimará, para dar aos seus eunucos e aos seus criados.

16  Também os vossos criados, e as vossas criadas, e os vossos melhores mancebos, e os vossos jumentos tomará, e os empregará no seu trabalho.

17 Dizimará o vosso rebanho, e vós lhe servireis de criados.

18 Então naquele dia clamareis por causa do rei, que vós houverdes escolhido; mas o Senhor não vos ouvirá naquele dia.

19 Porém o povo não quis ouvir a voz de Samuel; e disseram: Não, mais haverá sobre nós um rei.

20 E nós também seremos como todas as outras nações; e o nosso rei nos julgará, e sairá adiante de nós, e fará as nossas guerras.

21 Ouvindo pois Samuel todas as palavras do povo, as falou perante os ouvidos do Senhor.

22 Então o Senhor disse a Samuel: Dá ouvidos à voz, constitue-lhes rei. Então Samuel disse aos filhos de Israel: Vá-se cada qual à sua cidade.

7 When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered in Mizpah, the Philistines' chiefs went up against Israel: what the children of Israel heard: they feared because of the Philistines.

8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that he may deliver us from the hand of the Philistines.

9 Then Samuel took a suckling lamb, and sacrificed it whole as a burnt offering to the Lord: and Samuel cried to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord listened to him.

10 And it came to pass, when Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, that the Philistines came to battle against Israel: and the Lord thundered that day with great thunder over the Philistines, and terrified them so that they were defeated before the children of Israel.

11 And the men of Israel left Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them even below Beth-Car.

12 Then Samuel took a stone, and placed it between Mizpah and Shem, and called his name Ebenezer: and said, The Lord has helped us so far.

13 So the Philistines were slaughtered, and never came to Israel's terms again, because it was the Lord's hand against the Philistines every day of Samuel.

14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel from Ekron to Gath, and until its terms Israel snatched it out of the hands of the Philistines; and there was peace between Israel and among the Amorites.

15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

16 And he went from year to year, and surrounded Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places.

17 But he returned to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel: and there he built an altar to the Lord.

7 Ouvindo pois os filisteus que os filhos de Israel estavam congregados em Mizpá, subiram os maiorais dos filisteus contra Israel: o que ouvindo os filhos de Israel: temeram por causa dos filisteus.

8 Pelo que disseram os filhos de Israel a Samuel: Não cesses de clamar ao Senhor nosso Deus por nós, para que nos livre da mão dos filisteus.

9 Então tomou Samuel um cordeiro de mama, e sacrificou-o inteiro em holocausto ao Senhor: e clamou Samuel ao Senhor por Israel, e o Senhor lhe deu ouvidos.

10 E sucedeu que, estando Samuel sacrificando o holocausto, os filisteus chegaram à peleja contra Israel: e trovejou o Senhor aquele dia com grande trovoada sobre os filisteus, e os aterrou de tal modo que foram derrotados diante dos filhos de Israel.

11 E os homens de Israel saíram de Mizpá, e perseguiram os filisteus, e os feriram até abaixo de Bete-Car.

12 Então tomou Samuel uma pedra, e a pôs entre Mizpá e Sem, e chamou o seu nome Ebenézer: e disse: Até aqui nos ajudou o Senhor.
