The Book of the Prophet Hosea 8
Punishment is near
Put the trumpet to your mouth. He comes like an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant and rebelled against my law.
And they will cry out to me: “My God! We, Israel, know you.”
Israel has rejected good; the enemy will pursue him.
They made kings, but not by me; they appointed princes, but I did not know it; from their silver and their gold they made idols for themselves, to be destroyed.
Your calf, O Samaria, has been rejected; my anger is kindled against them; how long will they be unable to attain innocence?
For this is indeed from Israel; a craftsman made it, and it is not God; but the calf of Samaria will be broken in pieces.
For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: there is no stalk, the bud shall yield no meal: if it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.
Israel is devoured: now it is among the nations like a vessel in which no one takes pleasure.
For they have gone up to Assyria, like a wild donkey, all by itself: Ephraim has bought amoris.
Yet, though they buy among the nations, I will gather them: they have begun to be diminished because of the burden of the king of princes.
For Ephraim has multiplied altars to sin; he has altars to sin.
I wrote for them the great things of my law; but it is to him as a strange thing.
As for the sacrifices of my gifts, they sacrifice meat, and eat it, but the Lord does not accept it: now he will remember their iniquity, and punish their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
Because Israel has forgotten its Creator and built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; But I will send a fire against their cities, and it will consume their palaces.
