1 Woe to those who rest in Zion, and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria; who are renowned among the foremost nations, and to whom the house of Israel comes!

2 Go to Calneh, and see; and from there go to great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than yours?

3 You who prolong the evil day, and draw near to the place of violence;

4 You who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch yourselves out on your couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the midst of the herd;

5 You sing to the sound of the lute, and invent for yourselves musical instruments like David:

6 You drink wine from bowls, and anoint yourselves with the finest oils: but you do not grieve over the downfall of Joseph:

7 Behold, now you will go into captivity among the first to be taken captive, and the feasts of the lavish will cease.

8 The Lord God has sworn by his soul, the Lord God of hosts: I abhor the pride of Jacob, and I hate his palaces; and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.

9 And it shall come to pass, that there shall be left ten men in a house, and they shall die.

10 And his uncle, or he that burneth him, shall return to him, to carry the bones out of the house; and he shall say to him that sitteth in the corners of the house, Is there yet any with thee? And he shall say, No man. And he shall say, Be quiet; for we cannot make mention of the name of the Lord.

11 For behold, the Lord commands, and the great house shall be struck with breaches, and the small house with cracks.

12 Can horses run on the rock? Can oxen plow it? Why have you turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood?

13 You who rejoice in nothing, you who say, “Have we not become mighty by our own strength?”

14 For behold, I will raise up against you, O house of Israel, a nation, declares the Lord God of hosts, and it shall oppress you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the plain.

2 Passai a Calne, e vede; e dali ide à grande Hamate; depois descei a Gate dos filisteus: serão melhores que estes reinos? Ou será maior o seu termo do que o vosso termo?

3 Vós, que dilatais o dia mau, e vos chegais ao lugar de violência;

12 Poderão correr cavalos na rocha? Poderão lavrá-la com bois? Por que quebraduras haveis vós tornado o juízo em fel, e o fruto da justiça em alosna?

13 Vós que vos alegrais de nada, vós que dizeis: Não nos temos nós tornado poderosos por nossa força?

1 Hear this word, which I raise up as a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.

2 The virgin of Israel has fallen, she shall never rise again; she is forsaken in her land, there is none to raise her up.

3 For thus says the Lord God: The city out of which a thousand go forth shall retain a hundred, and that out of which a hundred go forth shall retain ten for the house of Israel.

4 For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek me, and live.

5 But seek not Bethel, nor go to Gilgal, nor pass over to Beersheba; for Gilgal is surely taken captive, and Bethel shall be brought to nothing.

6 Seek the Lord, and live, lest he break out like a fire in the house of Joseph, and consume it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

7 You who turn justice into wormwood and cast righteousness to the ground,

8 Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns the shadow of night into morning and darkens the day like night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth—the Lord is his name.

9 He who brings sudden destruction upon the strong, so that desolation comes upon the fortress.

10 They hate the one who reproves them in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks truthfully.

11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor and exact a tribute of grain from them, you will build houses of hewn stone, but you will not live in them; you will plant pleasant vineyards, but you will not drink their wine.

12 For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins: you afflict the righteous, you take bribes, and you reject the needy at the gate.

13 Therefore, the prudent man will keep silent at that time, for the time will be evil.

14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you say.

15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; perhaps the Lord, the God of hosts, will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore, thus says the Lord God of hosts, the Lord: In all the streets there will be weeping, and in all the neighborhoods they will say, “Alas! Alas!” And they will call the farmer to weeping, and those who know how to weep to lamentation.

17 And in all the vineyards there will be weeping; for I will pass through the midst of you, says the Lord.

18 Woe to those who long for the day of the Lord! For what do you long for the day of the Lord? It will be darkness, not light.

19 It will be like a man fleeing from a lion, only to meet a bear; or like a man going into a house, leaning his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake.

20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light? Will it not be utter darkness without any brightness?

21 I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no pleasure in your solemn assemblies.

22 Even though you offer me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; nor will I look upon the peace offerings of your fattened animals.

23 Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your instruments.

24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

25 Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness for forty years, people of Israel?

26 Instead, you carried the tent of your Moloch and the altar of your idols, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.

27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus, declares the Lord, whose name is the God Almighty.

22 E, ainda que me ofereçais holocaustos, e ofertas de manjares, não me agradarei delas: nem atentarei para as ofertas pacíficas de vossos animais gordos.

23 Afasta de mim o estrépito dos teus cânticos; porque não ouvirei as melodias dos teus instrumentos.

24 Corra porém o juízo como as águas, e a justiça como o ribeiro impetuoso.

25 Oferecestes-me vós sacrifícios e oblações no deserto por quarenta anos, ó casa de Israel?

1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your masters, “Bring us something to drink!”

2 The Lord God has sworn by his holiness that the days are coming upon you when you will be taken away with hooks, and your descendants with fishing hooks.

3 You will go out through the breaches, one after another, and you will be driven to Hermon, declares the Lord.

4 Go to Bethel and transgress; to Gilgal and multiply transgressions; bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three days.

5 Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leavened bread, and proclaim freewill offerings; publish them, for this is what you love, O children of Israel, declares the Lord God.

6 Therefore I also gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

7 Moreover, I withheld rain from you, even three months before the harvest; I made it rain on one city, and on another city I did not make it rain; on one field it rained, but the other, on which it did not rain, withered.

8 And two or three cities wandered, going to another city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

9 I struck you with blight and mildew; the multitude of your gardens and your vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees, the locust devoured; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

10 I sent plague among you, like Egypt: I killed your young men with the sword, and let your horses be taken captive, and I made the stench of your armies rise into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

11 I overthrew some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a brand snatched from the burning; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

12 Therefore, this is what I will do to you, Israel! And because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel.

13 For he is the one who forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares to man his thoughts, who turns the morning into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth—the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name.

1 Ouvi esta palavra, vós vacas de Basã, que estais no monte de Samaria, que oprimis os pobres, que quebrantais os necessitados, que dizeis a seus senhores: Dai cá, e bebamos.

2 Jurou o Senhor Jeová, pela sua santidade, que dias estão para vir sobre vós, em que vos levarão com anzóis e a vossos descendentes com anzóis de pesca.

4 Vinde a Betel, e transgredi; a Gilgal, e multiplicai as transgressões; e cada manhã trazei os vossos sacrifícios, e de três em três dias os vossos dízimos.

7 Além disso, retive de vós a chuva, faltando ainda três meses para a ceifa; e fiz chover sobre uma cidade, e sobre outra cidade não fiz chover; sobre um campo choveu, mas o outro, sobre o qual não choveu, se secou.

8 E andaram vagabundas duas ou três cidades, indo a outra cidade, para beberem água, mas não se saciaram: contudo não vos convertestes a mim, disse o Senhor.

9 Feri-vos com queimadura, e com ferrugem; a multidão das vossas hortas e das vossas vinhas, e das vossas figueiras, e das vossas oliveiras, foi comida pela locusta; contudo não vos convertestes a mim, disse o Senhor.

10 Enviei a peste contra vós, à maneira do Egito: os vossos mancebos matei à espada, e os vossos cavalos deixei levar presos, e o fedor dos vossos exércitos fiz subir aos vossos narizes; contudo não vos convertestes a mim, disse o Senhor.

1 Hear this word that the Lord speaks against you, children of Israel, against the whole generation that I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:

2 Of all the families of the earth I have known only you; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

4 Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out of his den if he has caught nothing?

5 Does a bird fall into a snare on the ground where there is no snare for it? Does a snare spring up on the ground if it has caught nothing?

6 Does a trumpet sound in the city, and the people not tremble? Does evil befall a city, and the Lord has not done it?

7 Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets?

8 The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken; who can but prophesy?

9 Proclaim this in the palaces of Ashdod, and in the palaces of the land of Egypt, and say: Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and see the great tumults in the midst of her, and the oppression within her.

10 For they do not know how to do what is right, says the Lord, storing up violence and destruction in their palaces.

2 Therefore I will send fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab shall die with a great noise, with a shout, with the sound of the trumpet.

3 And I will remove the judge from among them, and I will kill all their princes with him, says the Lord.

4 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have rejected the law of the Lord, and have not kept his statutes, but have let him be led astray by their own lies, after which their fathers walked.

5 Therefore I will send fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

6 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals;

7 They pant for the dust of the earth on the heads of the poor, and they turn aside the way of the meek; and a man and his father go in to the same young woman, to profane my holy name.

8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their gods they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

9 Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and whose strength was like that of the oaks; but I destroyed his fruit above, and his roots below.

10 I also brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might possess the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raised up prophets from among your sons, and Nazirites from among your young men. Is this not so, children of Israel? says the Lord.

12 But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and you commanded the prophets, saying, “Do not prophesy.”

13 Behold, I will press you into your place as one presses a cart full of sticks.

14 So the swift will not flee; the strong will not strengthen his strength, nor will the mighty deliver his life.

15 And he who carries the bow will not stand, nor will the swift of foot escape, nor will he who rides a horse deliver his soul.

16 And the most courageous among the mighty will flee naked on that day, says the Lord.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 And he said: “The Lord will roar from Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem; in the dwellings of the shepherds there will be weeping, and the top of Carmel will wither.”

3 Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron.

4 Therefore I will send fire upon the house of Hazael, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.” 5 I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant of Bikeath-aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre out of Beth-eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the Lord.

6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment, because they carried away captive all the captives, to deliver them up to Edom.

7 Therefore I will send fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it shall consume the palaces thereof.

8 And I will cut off the inhabitant of Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre out of Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord God.

9 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment, because they delivered up all the captives to Edom, and remembered not the covenant of the brethren.

10 Therefore I will send fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will consume its palaces.

11 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword, and banished all mercy; and his anger tears forever, and retains his indignation forever.

12 Therefore I will send fire on Teman, and it will consume the palaces of Bozrah.

13 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, to enlarge their territory.

14 Therefore I will send fire on the wall of Rabbah, and it will consume its palaces, with a shout on the day of battle, with a storm on the day of the tempest.

Ameaças contra diversas nações e contra Judá

 

1 As palavras de Amós, que estava entre os pastores de Técoa, o que ele viu a respeito de Israel, nos dias de Uzias, rei de Judá, e nos dias de Jeroboão, filho de Joás, rei de Israel, dois anos antes do terremoto.

2 E disse: O Senhor bramará de Sião e de Jerusalém dará a sua voz; nas habitações dos pastores haverá pranto, e secar-se-á o cume do Carmelo.

3 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Damasco, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque trilharam a Gileade com trilhos de ferro.

4 Por isso porei fogo à casa de Hazael, e ele consumirá os palácios de Benadade.

5 E quebrarei o ferrolho de Damasco, e exterminarei o morador de Biqueate-Aven, e ao que tem o cetro de Bete-Éden; e o povo da Síria será levado em cativeiro a Quir, diz o Senhor.

6 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Gaza, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque levaram em cativeiro todos os cativos para os entregarem a Edom.

7 Por isso porei fogo ao muro de Gaza, e ele consumirá os seus palácios.

8 E exterminarei o morador de Asdode, e o que tem o cetro de Ascalom, e tornarei a minha mão contra Ecrom; e o resto dos filisteus perecerá, diz o Senhor Jeová.

9 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Tiro, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque entregaram todos os cativos a Edom, e não se lembraram da aliança dos irmãos.

10 Por isso porei fogo ao muro de Tiro, e ele consumirá os seus palácios.

11 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Edom, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque perseguiu a seu irmão à espada, e baniu toda a misericórdia; e a sua ira despedaça eternamente, e retém a sua indignação para sempre.

12 Por isso porei fogo a Temã, e ele consumirá os palácios de Bozra.

13 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões dos filhos de Amom, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque fenderam as grávidas de Gileade, para dilatarem os seus termos.

14 Por isso porei fogo ao muro de Rabá, e ele consumirá os seus palácios, com alarido do dia da batalha, com tempestade no dia da tormenta.

15 E o seu rei irá para o cativeiro, ele e os seus príncipes juntamente, diz o Senhor.

1 क्योंकि देखो, उन दिनों और उस समय, जब मैं यहूदा और यरूशलेम की किस्मत ठीक करूँगा,

2 मैं सभी देशों को इकट्ठा करूँगा और उन्हें यहोशापात की घाटी में ले जाऊँगा। वहाँ मैं उन पर मुकदमा चलाऊँगा कि उन्होंने मेरे लोगों, मेरी विरासत, इज़राइल के साथ क्या किया, क्योंकि उन्होंने मेरे लोगों को देशों में बिखेर दिया और मेरी ज़मीन को बाँट दिया।

3 उन्होंने मेरे लोगों के लिए चिट्ठियाँ डालीं; उन्होंने एक लड़के को एक वेश्या के बदले बेच दिया और एक लड़की को शराब के लिए बेच दिया, ताकि वे पी सकें।

7 देखो, मैं उन्हें उस जगह से हटा दूंगा जहां तुमने उन्हें बेचा था, और मैं तुम्हारा बदला तुम्हारे ही सिर पर डालूंगा।

13 हँसिया लगाओ, क्योंकि फसल पक चुकी है; आओ, दाखमधु को रौंदो, क्योंकि दाखमधु का कुंड भर गया है, रस के हौद उफान पर हैं; क्योंकि उनकी बुराई बहुत बड़ी है।

14 फैसले की घाटी में भीड़, भीड़! क्योंकि फैसले की घाटी में प्रभु का दिन पास है।

15 सूरज और चाँद बड़े होंगे, और तारे अपनी चमक वापस ले लेंगे।

16 तब प्रभु सिय्योन से गरजेंगे, और यरूशलेम से अपनी आवाज़ सुनाएँगे; आसमान और धरती काँप उठेंगे। लेकिन प्रभु अपने लोगों के लिए एक पनाहगाह, इस्राएल के बच्चों के लिए एक मज़बूत जगह होंगे।

17 और तुम जान जाओगे कि मैं तुम्हारा परमेश्वर प्रभु हूँ, जो सिय्योन में रहता हूँ, मेरे पवित्र पहाड़ पर; अजनबी अब वहाँ से नहीं गुज़रेंगे।

18 और उस दिन ऐसा होगा कि पहाड़ों से मीठी शराब टपकेगी, और पहाड़ियों से दूध बहेगा, और यहूदा की सभी नदियाँ पानी से भर जाएँगी; और यहोवा के घर से एक झरना निकलेगा, जो शित्तीम घाटी को सींचेगा।

19 मिस्र उजाड़ हो जाएगा, और एदोम एक सुनसान जंगल बन जाएगा, यहूदा के बच्चों पर हुए ज़ुल्म की वजह से, जिनकी ज़मीन पर उन्होंने बेगुनाहों का खून बहाया।

20 लेकिन यहूदा हमेशा बसा रहेगा, और यरूशलेम पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी।

God's Judgments on Enemy Nations: Israel Will Be Restored

1 For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,

2 I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my people, my inheritance, Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land.

3 They cast lots for my people; they traded a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

4 And what have you to do with me, Tyre and Sidon and all the borders of Phoenicia? Is this the kind of payment you give me? If you pay me this way, I will quickly repay you.

5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried away my precious and beautiful things into your temples;

6 And you have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, to remove them far from their borders;

7 Behold, I will remove them from the place where you sold them, and I will cause your recompense to fall upon your own head.

8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters by the hand of the children of Judah, who shall sell them to the sons of Sheba, to a distant nation, for the Lord has spoken.

9 Proclaim this among the nations: Consecrate war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war draw near, let them come up.

10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am strong.”

11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all you nations round about, and gather yourselves together (O Lord, bring down your mighty ones there!);

12 Let the nations be roused, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the nations round about.

13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, tread, for the winepress is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.

15 The sun and the moon shall be great, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

16 Then the Lord shall roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; the heavens and the earth shall tremble. But the Lord shall be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the children of Israel. 

17 And you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain; strangers shall no more pass through it.

18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drip with sweet wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall be full of waters; and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

19 Egypt shall become a desolation, and Edom shall become a desolate wilderness, because of the violence done to the children of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.

20 But Judah shall be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

21 And I will cleanse the blood of them whom I had not cleansed: for the Lord shall dwell in Zion.
