 The Book of the Prophet Amos 2

1 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.

2 Therefore I will send fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab shall die with a great noise, with a shout, with the sound of the trumpet.

3 And I will remove the judge from among them, and I will kill all their princes with him, says the Lord.

4 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have rejected the law of the Lord, and have not kept his statutes, but have let him be led astray by their own lies, after which their fathers walked.

5 Therefore I will send fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

6 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals;

7 They pant for the dust of the earth on the heads of the poor, and they turn aside the way of the meek; and a man and his father go in to the same young woman, to profane my holy name.

8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their gods they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

9 Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and whose strength was like that of the oaks; but I destroyed his fruit above, and his roots below.

10 I also brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might possess the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raised up prophets from among your sons, and Nazirites from among your young men. Is this not so, children of Israel? says the Lord.

12 But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and you commanded the prophets, saying, “Do not prophesy.”

13 Behold, I will press you into your place as one presses a cart full of sticks.

14 So the swift will not flee; the strong will not strengthen his strength, nor will the mighty deliver his life.

15 And he who carries the bow will not stand, nor will the swift of foot escape, nor will he who rides a horse deliver his soul.

16 And the most courageous among the mighty will flee naked on that day, says the Lord.

1 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Moabe, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque queimou os ossos do rei de Edom, até os reduzir a cal.

2 Por isso porei fogo a Moabe, e ele consumirá os palácios de Queriote; e Moabe morrerá com grande estrondo, com alarido, com som de buzina.

3 E tirarei o juiz do meio dele, e a todos os seus príncipes com ele matarei, diz o Senhor.

4 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Judá, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque rejeitaram a lei do Senhor, e não guardaram os seus estatutos, antes o deixaram enganar por suas próprias mentiras, após as quais andaram seus pais.

5 Por isso porei fogo a Judá, e ele consumirá os palácios de Jerusalém.

6 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Israel, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque vendem o justo por dinheiro, e o necessitado por um par de sapatos;

7 Suspirando pelo pó da terra sobre a cabeça dos pobres, eles pervertem o caminho dos mansos; e um homem e seu pai entram à mesma moça, para profanarem o meu santo nome.

8 E se deitam junto a qualquer altar sobre roupas empenhadas, e na casa de seus deuses bebem o vinho dos que tinham multado.

9 Não obstante eu ter destruído o amorreu diante deles, a altura do qual era como a altura dos cedros, e cuja força era como a dos carvalhos; mas destruí o seu fruto por cima, e as suas raízes por baixo.

10 Também vos fiz subir da terra do Egito, e quarenta anos vos guiei no deserto, para que possuísseis a terra do amorreu.

11 E dentre vossos filhos levantei profetas, e dentre os vossos mancebos narizeus. Não é isto assim, filhos de Israel? Diz o Senhor.

12 Mas vós aos narizeus destes vinho a beber, e aos profetas ordenastes, dizendo: Não profetizeis.

13 Eis que eu vos apertarei no vosso lugar como se aperta um carro cheio de manolhos.

14 Assim que de nada valerá a fuga ao ágil; nem o forte corroborará a sua força, nem o valente livrará a sua vida.

15 E não ficará em pé o que leva o arco, nem o ligeiro de pés se livrará, nem tão pouco o que vai montado a cavalo livrará a sua alma.

16 E o mais animoso entre os valentes fugirá nu naquele dia, disse o Senhor.

10 इसलिए मैं सोर की दीवार पर आग भेजूँगा, और वह उसके महलों को भस्म कर देगी।

Threats against various nations and against Judah

1 The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 And he said: “The Lord will roar from Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem; in the dwellings of the shepherds there will be weeping, and the top of Carmel will wither.”

3 Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron.

4 Therefore I will send fire upon the house of Hazael, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.” 5 I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant of Bikeath-aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre out of Beth-eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the Lord.

6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment, because they carried away captive all the captives, to deliver them up to Edom.

7 Therefore I will send fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it shall consume the palaces thereof.

8 And I will cut off the inhabitant of Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre out of Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord God.

9 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment, because they delivered up all the captives to Edom, and remembered not the covenant of the brethren.

10 Therefore I will send fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will consume its palaces.

11 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword, and banished all mercy; and his anger tears forever, and retains his indignation forever.

12 Therefore I will send fire on Teman, and it will consume the palaces of Bozrah.

13 Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, to enlarge their territory.

14 Therefore I will send fire on the wall of Rabbah, and it will consume its palaces, with a shout on the day of battle, with a storm on the day of the tempest.

15 And its king will go into captivity, he and his princes together, says the Lord.

6 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Gaza, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque levaram em cativeiro todos os cativos para os entregarem a Edom.

7 Por isso porei fogo ao muro de Gaza, e ele consumirá os seus palácios.

8 E exterminarei o morador de Asdode, e o que tem o cetro de Ascalom, e tornarei a minha mão contra Ecrom; e o resto dos filisteus perecerá, diz o Senhor Jeová.

9 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Tiro, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque entregaram todos os cativos a Edom, e não se lembraram da aliança dos irmãos.

10 Por isso porei fogo ao muro de Tiro, e ele consumirá os seus palácios.

11 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões de Edom, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque perseguiu a seu irmão à espada, e baniu toda a misericórdia; e a sua ira despedaça eternamente, e retém a sua indignação para sempre.

12 Por isso porei fogo a Temã, e ele consumirá os palácios de Bozra.

13 Assim diz o Senhor: Por três transgressões dos filhos de Amom, e por quatro, não retirarei o castigo, porque fenderam as grávidas de Gileade, para dilatarem os seus termos.

14 Por isso porei fogo ao muro de Rabá, e ele consumirá os seus palácios, com alarido do dia da batalha, com tempestade no dia da tormenta.

15 E o seu rei irá para o cativeiro, ele e os seus príncipes juntamente, diz o Senhor.

God's Judgments on Enemy Nations: Israel Will Be Restored

1 For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,

2 I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my people, my inheritance, Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land.

3 They cast lots for my people; they traded a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

4 And what have you to do with me, Tyre and Sidon and all the borders of Phoenicia? Is this the kind of payment you give me? If you pay me this way, I will quickly repay you.

5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried away my precious and beautiful things into your temples;

6 And you have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, to remove them far from their borders;

7 Behold, I will remove them from the place where you sold them, and I will cause your recompense to fall upon your own head.

8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters by the hand of the children of Judah, who shall sell them to the sons of Sheba, to a distant nation, for the Lord has spoken.

9 Proclaim this among the nations: Consecrate war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war draw near, let them come up.

10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am strong.”

11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all you nations round about, and gather yourselves together (O Lord, bring down your mighty ones there!);

12 Let the nations be roused, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the nations round about.

13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, tread, for the winepress is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.

15 The sun and the moon shall be great, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

16 Then the Lord shall roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; the heavens and the earth shall tremble. But the Lord shall be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the children of Israel. 

17 And you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain; strangers shall no more pass through it.

18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drip with sweet wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall be full of waters; and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

19 Egypt shall become a desolation, and Edom shall become a desolate wilderness, because of the violence done to the children of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.

20 But Judah shall be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

21 And I will cleanse the blood of them whom I had not cleansed: for the Lord shall dwell in Zion.

1 Porquanto, eis que naqueles dias, e naquele tempo, em que removerei o cativeiro de Judá e de Jerusalém.

2 Congregarei todas as nações, e as farei descer ao vale de Josafá; e ali com elas entrarei em juízo, por causa do meu povo, e da minha herança, Israel, a quem eles espalharam entre as nações, repartindo a minha terra.

3 E lançaram a sorte sobre o meu povo, e deram um menino por uma meretriz, e venderam uma menina por vinho, para beberem.

4 E também que tendes vós comigo, Tiro e Sidom, e todos os termos da Fenícia? É tal pago que vós me dais? Pois se me pagais assim, bem depressa farei cair a vossa paga sobre a vossa cabeça.

5 Visto como levastes a minha prata e o meu ouro, e as minhas coisas desejáveis e formosas metestes nos vossos templos;

6 E vendestes os filhos de Judá, e os filhos de Jerusalém aos filhos dos gregos, para os apartar para longe dos seus termos;

7 Eis que eu os moverei do lugar para onde os vendestes, e farei cair a vossa paga sobre a vossa própria cabeça.

11 Ajuntai-vos, e vinde, todos os povos em redor, e congregai-vos (ó Senhor, faze descer ali os teus fortes!);

12 Movam-se as nações, e subam ao vale de Josafá; porque ali me assentarei, para julgar todas as nações em redor.

13 Lançai a foice, porque já está madura a seara: vinde, descei, porque o lagar está cheio, os vasos dos lagares transbordam; porquanto a sua malícia é grande.

14 Multidões, multidões no vale da decisão! Porque o dia do Senhor está perto, no vale da decisão.

15 O sol e a lua se engrandecerão, e as estrelas retirarão o seu resplendor.

16 E o Senhor bramará de Sião, e dará a sua voz de Jerusalém, e os céus e a terra tremerão; mas o Senhor será o refúgio do seu povo, e a fortaleza dos filhos de Israel.

17 E vós sabereis que eu sou o Senhor vosso Deus, que habito em Sião, o monte da minha santidade; estranhos não passarão mais por ela.

18 E há de ser que, naquele dia, os montes destilarão mosto, e dos outeiros manará leite, e todos os rios de Judá estarão cheios de águas; e sairá uma fonte da casa do Senhor, e regará o vale de Sitim.

19 O Egito se tornará uma assolação, e Edom se fará um deserto de solidão, por causa da violência que fizeram aos filhos de Judá, em cuja terra derramaram sangue inocente.

20 Mas Judá será habitada para sempre, e Jerusalém de geração em geração.

21 E purificarei o sangue dos que eu não tinha purificado: porque o Senhor habitará em Sião.

1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near.

2 A day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the dawn spreading over the mountains, a great and powerful people, such as never was before, nor will be again after them, even to many generations.

3 Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame burns; the land before them is like the garden of Eden, but behind them a desolate wilderness; nothing escapes them.

4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; they run like horsemen.

5 Like the rumbling of chariots on the mountaintops they leap; like the noise of a flame of fire consuming stubble, like a mighty people arrayed for battle.

6 Before him the peoples will tremble; every face will be like the blackening of a pot.

7 Like mighty men they will run, like warriors they will scale the walls; each will go in his own path and will not turn aside from his rank.

8 No one will jostle his brother; each will run in his own lane; they will rush upon the sword and not be wounded.

9 They will go through the city, they will run along the walls, they will climb into the houses, they will enter through the windows like a thief.

13 Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

14 Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing—grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God.

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, proclaim a sacred assembly.

16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.

2 Hear this, you elders, and listen, all you inhabitants of the land: Has anything like this ever happened in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

3 Tell your children about it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

4 What the caterpillar left, the locust ate; what the locust left, the grasshopper ate; and what the grasshopper left, the cankerworm ate.

5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine, for it has been taken from your mouths.

6 For a nation has come up against my land, powerful and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and it has the jaws of a wild lion.

7 He has made my vine a desolation, and stripped my fig tree bare; he has utterly stripped it, and cast it down; its branches have become white.

12 A vide se secou, a figueira se murchou; a romeira também, e a palmeira e a macieira; todas as árvores do campo se secaram, e a alegria se secou entre os filhos dos homens.

13 Cingi-vos e lamentai-vos, sacerdotes; gemei, ministros do altar; entrai e passai, vestidos de sacos, durante a noite, ministros do meu Deus; porque a oferta de manjares, e a libação, cortadas foram da casa de vosso Deus.

14 Santificai um jejum, apregoai um dia de proibição, congregai os anciãos, e todos os moradores desta terra, na casa do Senhor vosso Deus, e clamai ao Senhor.

15 Ah! Aquele dia! Porque o dia do Senhor está perto, e virá como uma assolação do Todo-poderoso.

16 Porventura o mantimento não está cortado de diante de nossos olhos? A alegria e o regozijo da casa de nosso Deus?

17 A semente apodreceu debaixo dos seus torrões, os celeiros foram assolados, os armazéns derrubados, porque se secou o trigo.

18 Como geme o gado! As manadas de vacas estão confusas, porque não têm pasto: também os rebanhos de ovelhas são destruídos.

19 A ti, ó Senhor clamo, porque o fogo consumiu os pastos do deserto, e a chama abrasou todas as árvores do campo.

20 Também todos os animais do campo bramam a ti; porque os rios se secaram, e o fogo consumiu os pastos do deserto.
