The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 44 Threats against the Jews who fled to Egypt

 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 44

Threats against the Jews who fled to Egypt

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who lived in the land of Egypt, who dwelt in Migdol, and in Tahpanhes, and in Noph, and in the land of Pathros, saying:

2 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the evil that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah; and behold, they are today a desolation, and no one dwells in them;

3 Because of their wickedness which they committed, to provoke me to anger, going to burn incense and serve other gods, which neither they nor you nor your fathers have known.

4 Therefore I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying: “Do not do this abominable thing that I hate.”

5 But they did not listen or incline their ear to turn from their wickedness, to not burn incense to strange gods.

6 Therefore my indignation and my anger were poured out, and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they became a desolation and a wasteland, as it is this day.

7 Now therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you do such great evil against yourselves, to cut off man and woman, child and nursing child, from the midst of Judah, so that you leave no remnant there?

8 Provoking me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to strange gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to sojourn, so that you may cut off yourselves, and become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

9 Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

10 They have not humbled themselves to this day, nor have they feared, nor have they walked in my law, nor in my statutes, which I set before you and before your fathers.

11 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I set my face against you for evil, and to uproot all Judah.

12 And I will take the remnant of Judah, who set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there; and they shall all be consumed in the land of Egypt; they shall fall by the sword, and die of famine; they shall be consumed, from the least to the greatest; They shall die by the sword and by famine; they shall be an object of execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.

13 For I will visit those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I visited Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence.

14 So that none shall escape, none shall remain of the remnant of Judah, which went into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, to return to the land of Judah, to which it was their soul's desire to return and dwell there; but none shall return except those who escape.

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood in a great multitude, and all the people who dwelt in the land of Egypt in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying:

16 As for the word which you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not obey you;

17 But we will certainly do everything we promised: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, just as we, our ancestors, our kings and our officials did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had plenty of food and were well off and suffered no harm.

18 But since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and famine.

19 And when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make cakes for her to worship her and pour out drink offerings to her without our husbands?

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and women, and to all the people who had given him this answer, saying:

21 “Did the Lord not remember, and did it not come into his heart, the incense that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, as well as the people of the land?

22 Therefore the Lord could no longer bear the evil of your deeds, the abominations that you committed; therefore your land became a desolate waste, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitants, as it is this day.

23 Because you burned incense, and because you sinned against the Lord, and did not obey the voice of the Lord, and did not walk in his law and in his testimonies, therefore this evil has befallen you, as it is this day.”

24 Jeremiah also said to all the people and to all the women: “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who are in the land of Egypt.

25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You and your wives have not only spoken with your mouths, but have also acted with your hands, saying, “We will surely perform our vows which we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.” You have perfectly confirmed your vows and perfectly performed them.

26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I swear by my great name, says the Lord, that my name shall no more be pronounced by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “As the Lord God lives!”

27 Behold, I will watch over them for evil and not for good; and every male of Judah who is in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until they are utterly destroyed.

28 And those who escape the sword will return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, few in number, and all the remnant of Judah, who went into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, will know whether my word or theirs will stand.

29 And this will be a sign to you, declares the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, so that you may know that my words against you will surely stand for evil.

30 Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will deliver Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I delivered Zedekiah, king of Judah, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, his enemy, who sought his life.

O livro do Profeta Jeremias 44

2 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Vós vistes todo o mal que fiz cair sobre Jerusalém, e sobre todas as cidades de Judá: e eis que elas são hoje um deserto, e ninguém habita nelas;

7 Agora, pois assim diz o Senhor, Deus dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Por que fazeis vós tão grande mal contra as vossas almas, para desarraigardes ao homem e à mulher, à criança e ao que mama, do meio de Judá, a fim de não deixardes ali resto algum;

16 Quanto à palavra que nos anunciaste em nome do Senhor, não te obedeceremos a ti;

Prophecy of the Conquest of Egypt by Nebuchadnezzar

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying:

9 “Take large stones in your hand and hide them among the clay in the furnace that is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the Jewish men.

10 And say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne upon these stones that I have hidden; and he shall spread his royal tent over them.

11 And he shall come and strike the land of Egypt: those for death, to death; those for captivity, to captivity; those for the sword, to the sword.

12 And I will send fire upon the houses of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them, and carry them away captive; And he shall adorn himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment, and shall go out from there in peace.

13 And he shall break the images of Beth-shemesh, which is in the land of Egypt, and burn the houses of the gods of Egypt with fire.

5 इसके बजाय, कारेह के बेटे योहानान और सेना के सभी कमांडर यहूदा के उन सभी बचे हुए लोगों को ले गए जो उन सभी देशों से लौटे थे जहाँ वे यहूदा देश में रहने के लिए बिखरे हुए थे;

Jeremiah is taken to Egypt by the people

1 And it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of telling all the people all the words of the Lord their God, which the Lord their God had sent him to say, and all those words were,

2 Then Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, said to Jeremiah, “You speak lies; the Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to sojourn there.’

3 Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us, or that they may carry us away to Babylon.”

4 So Johanan son of Kareah, and none of the commanders of the army, nor all the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord to remain in the land of Judah.

5 Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the army took all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations where they had been scattered to sojourn in the land of Judah;

6 The men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah:

7 And they went into the land of Egypt, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; and they came to Tahpanhes.

2 Então falou Azarias, filho de Hosaías, e Joanã, filho de Careá, e todos os homens soberbos, dizendo a Jeremias: Tu dizes mentiras; o Senhor nosso Deus não te enviou a dizer: Não entreis no Egito, para lá peregrinardes;

5 Antes tomou Joanã, filho de Careá, e todos os príncipes dos exércitos a todo o resto de Judá, que havia voltado dentre todas as nações, para onde haviam sido lançados com o fim de peregrinarem na terra de Judá;

2 और उन्होंने यिर्मयाह पैगंबर से कहा, “अब हमारी गुहार तुम्हारे सामने है, और इन सब बचे हुए लोगों के लिए हमारे लिए अपने भगवान यहोवा से प्रार्थना करो; क्योंकि जैसा तुम अपनी आँखों से देख रहे हो, हम बहुतों में से थोड़े ही बचे हैं;

The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 42 Jeremiah exhorts the people not to go to the land of Egypt

 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 42

Jeremiah exhorts the people not to go to the land of Egypt

1 Then all the commanders of the army came, and Johanan son of Kareah, and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest,

2 And they said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let our plea now be before you, and pray to the Lord your God for us concerning all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes see;

3 That the Lord your God may teach us the way we should walk and the thing we should do.”

4 And Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you; behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words; and whatever the Lord answers you, I will declare to you; I will hide nothing from you.”

5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a witness between us of truth and faithfulness, if we do not do according to all the word with which the Lord your God sends you to us.

6 Whether it is good or bad, we obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send you, so that it may go well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”

7 And it came to pass at the end of ten days that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.

8 Then he summoned Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the army who were with him, and all the people, from the least to the greatest,

9 and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your supplication before him:

10 If you will indeed remain in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I am sorry for the evil that I have done to you.”

11 Do not fear the king of Babylon, whom you fear; do not fear, says the Lord, for I am with you to save you and to deliver you from his hand.

12 And I will show you mercy, so that he may have mercy on you and bring you back to your own land.

13 But if you say, “We will not stay in this land, disobeying the voice of the Lord your God,”

14 saying, “No, we will go to the land of Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the trumpet, nor will we hunger for bread,” and there we will stay.

15 In that case, hear the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah; Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: If you are determined to go to Egypt and sojourn there,

16 then the sword that you fear will overtake you in the land of Egypt, and the famine that you dread will be with you in Egypt, and you will die there.

17 So it will be with all the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to sojourn there: they will die by the sword, by famine, and by plague; and none of them will be left to escape the evil that I have spoken will come upon them.

18 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt; and you will be a curse, and an astonishment, and an execration, and a reproach, and you will never see this place again.

19 The Lord has spoken concerning you, O remnant of Judah! Do not go into Egypt; be certain that I have testified against you today.

20 For you have deceived yourselves, for you sent me to the Lord your God, and according to all that the Lord our God says, declare it to us, and we will do it.

21 And I have declared it to you today, but you have not listened to the voice of the Lord your God in anything for which he sent me to you.

22 Now therefore know for certain that you will die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the very place where you desired to enter, to sojourn there.

O livro do Profeta Jeremias 42

Jeremias exorta o povo a não ir à terra do Egito

2 E disseram a Jeremias, o profeta: Caia agora a nossa súplica diante de ti, e roga por nós ao Senhor teu Deus, por todo este resto; porque de muitos restamos uns poucos, como vêem os teus olhos;

The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 41 The Assassination of Gedaliah

 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 41

The Assassination of Gedaliah

1 Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of royal blood, and the king's captains, namely, ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, to Mizpah; and there they ate bread together in Mizpah.

2 Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah rose up with the ten men who were with him, and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword; thus killing him whom the king of Babylon had set over the land.

3 Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him and Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Chaldeans, the men of war, who were there.

4 Now it came to pass the next day, after he had killed Gedaliah, without anyone knowing,

5 That men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men, with shaved beards, and their clothes torn, and dressed in sackcloth; and they brought offerings of food and incense in their hands, to take to the house of the Lord.

6 And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out to meet them from Mizpah, weeping as he went; and it happened that, when he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.”

7 But it happened that, when they went into the midst of the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah killed them and threw them into a pit, he and the men who were with him.

8 But there were ten men among them who said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us; for we have hidden treasures in the field, wheat and barley and oil and honey.” And so he spared them, and did not kill them as he had killed their brothers.

9 Now the well into which Ishmael threw all the dead bodies of the men whom he had struck down because of Gedaliah is the same well that King Asa made because of Baasha, king of Israel; it was the same well into which Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, filled with the dead.

10 Ishmael carried away captive all the remnant of the people who were in Mizpah, the king’s daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had entrusted to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam; and Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, carried them away captive; and he went to pass over to the Ammonites.

11 When Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, had done.

12 They took all their men and went to fight against Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and they found him by the abundant waters of Gibeon.

13 When all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the army who were with him, they rejoiced.

14 All the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned back and went to Johanan son of Kareah.

15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah escaped with eight men from Johanan and went to the Ammonites.

16 Then Johanan son of Kareah took all the army commanders who were with him, and all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah at Mizpah, after Gedaliah son of Ahikam had been defeated, and the mighty warriors, the women, the children, and the eunuchs whom he had recovered from Gibeon,

17 and they set out and went to live in Geruth-Chimham, which is near Bethlehem, to go from there to Egypt,

18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had defeated Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had set over the land.

1 जब गार्ड के कप्तान नेबूजरदान ने यिर्मयाह को रामा से जाने दिया, तो यहोवा की तरफ से उसके पास यह बात आई, जब वह यरूशलेम और यहूदा के उन सभी कैदियों के बीच जंजीरों से बंधा हुआ था जिन्हें बेबीलोन ले जाया गया था;

2 क्योंकि गार्ड के कप्तान ने यिर्मयाह को पकड़कर उससे कहा, “तुम्हारे परमेश्वर यहोवा ने इस जगह के खिलाफ यह बुराई करने की बात कही है;

The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 40 Jeremiah stays in Mizpah with Gedaliah

 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 40

Jeremiah stays in Mizpah with Gedaliah

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had let him go from Ramah, when he took him, while he was bound with chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who had been carried away captive to Babylon;

2 For the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God has pronounced this evil against this place;

3 And the Lord has brought it about, and has done as he said, because you have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed his voice; therefore all this has happened to you.

4 Now therefore, behold, I have released you today from the chains that were on your hands. If you are willing to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will watch over you; but if you are not willing to come with me to Babylon, do not come.” Look, all the land is before you; wherever it seems good and right to you to go, go there.

5 But since he had not returned, he said to him, “Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and live with him among the people; or if you prefer to go anywhere else, go.” And the captain of the guard gave him provisions for the journey and a present, and let him go.

6 So Jeremiah came to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and lived with him among the people who remained in the land.

7 Now all the commanders of the armies who were in the field, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land and had entrusted to him the men, women, children, and the poorest of the land who had not been taken captive to Babylon.

8 They came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. They were: Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan, Jonathan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of a Maacathite, they and their men.

9 Then Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and to their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Stay in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.”

10 But I, behold, I am dwelling in Mizpah to be at the service of the Chaldeans who have come to us; and you gather the wine, the summer fruits, and the oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities which you have taken.

11 Likewise, when all the Jews who were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and those who were in all those lands, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah, and that he had set Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over them,

12 Then all the Jews returned from all the places where they had been scattered, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.

13 Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the armies who were in the field, came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.

14 They said to him, “You know that Baalis, king of the Ammonites, has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you.” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

15 However, Johanan son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah secretly at Mizpah, saying, “I will go now and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah without anyone knowing it. Why should he kill you, and all Judah who are gathered to you be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?”

16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do not do such a thing; for you are speaking falsely against Ishmael.”

 O livro do Profeta Jeremias 40

Jeremias fica em Mizpá com Gedalias

1 A palavra que veio a Jeremias da parte do Senhor, depois que Nebuzaradão, capitão da guarda, o deixou ir de Ramá, quando o tomou, estando ele atado com cadeias no meio de todos os do cativeiro de Jerusalém e de Judá, que foram levados cativos para Babilônia;

2 Porque o capitão da guarda levou Jeremias, e lhe disse: O Senhor teu Deus pronunciou este mal contra este lugar;

Nebuchadnezzar Takes Jerusalem and Delivers Jeremiah

1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it.

2 In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the breach was made in the city.

3 Then all the princes of the king of Babylon entered and stood at the Middle Gate, including Negal-Sharezer, Shamgar-Nebo, Sarsechim, Rabesaris, Nergal-Sharezer, Rabmag, and all the other princes of the king of Babylon.

4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, they fled and went out of the city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls; 4 And he went out by the way of the plain.

5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them; and they overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and took him captive, and brought him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and there he sentenced him.

6 And the king of Babylon killed Zedekiah’s sons at Riblah before his eyes; the king of Babylon also killed all the nobles of Judah.

7 And he gouged out Zedekiah’s eyes, and bound him with two bronze chains, to take him to Babylon.

8 And the Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the houses of the people with fire, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

9 And the rest of the people who remained in the city, and the rebels who had gone over to him, and the rest of the people who remained, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carried away to Babylon.

10 But the poor among the people, who had nothing, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left in the land of Judah; and he gave them vineyards and fields that day.

11 But Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had given orders concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, saying,

12 “Take him, and keep a close eye on him, and do him no harm; but do to him as he tells you.”

13 So Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, gave orders, along with Nebus-Hashban, Rab-saris, Nergal-sharezer, Rab-mag, and all the princes of the king of Babylon.

14 They took Jeremiah from the court of the guard and delivered him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him to his house. And he remained among the people.

15 Now the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard, saying,

16 “Go and speak to Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring My words upon this city for evil and not for good; and they shall be fulfilled before you in that day.

17 But I will deliver you in that day, says the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men before whom you fear.

18 For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword; but your life shall be yours for a prize, because you trusted in Me, says the Lord.’”

O livro do Profeta Jeremias 39
