2 “यहोवा यह कहता है: ‘जो कोई भी इस शहर में बचेगा वह तलवार, अकाल और महामारी से मरेगा, लेकिन जो कोई भी कसदियों के पास जाएगा वह जीवित रहेगा; उनकी जान उन्हें इनाम के तौर पर दी जाएगी, और वे जीवित रहेंगे।’

3 यहोवा यह कहता है: ‘यह शहर ज़रूर बेबीलोन के राजा की सेना के हाथों में दे दिया जाएगा, और वह इसे ले लेगा।’”

16 तब राजा सिदकियाह ने चुपके से यिर्मयाह से कसम खाई, “यहोवा के जीवन की शपथ, जिसने हमें यह आत्मा बनाया है, मैं तुम्हें न तो मारूँगा और न ही इन लोगों के हाथ में दूँगा जो तुम्हारी जान लेना चाहते हैं।”

17 तब यिर्मयाह ने सिदकियाह से कहा, “सेनाओं का परमेश्वर, इस्राएल का परमेश्वर, यहोवा यह कहता है: ‘अगर तुम बेबीलोन के राजा के अधिकारियों के पास जाओगे, तो तुम्हारी जान बच जाएगी, और यह शहर जलाया नहीं जाएगा, और तुम और तुम्हारा परिवार बच जाएगा।

Jeremiah is thrown into the dungeon

1 Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people:

2 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever is left in this city will die by the sword, famine and plague, but whoever goes to the Chaldeans will live; their life will be given to them as a prize, and they will live.’

3 This is what the Lord says: ‘This city will surely be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.’”

4 Then the officials said to the king, “This man should be put to death, because he is weakening the hands of the fighting men who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the peace of this people, but only their harm.”

5 Then King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hand, for the king cannot do anything against you.”

6 So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the dungeon of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They let Jeremiah down with ropes, but there was no water in the dungeon, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

7 Now Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was then in the king’s house, heard that Jeremiah had been put into the dungeon (the king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate).

8 Immediately Ebed-Melech went out of the king’s house. And he spoke to the king, saying:

9 “My lord the king, these men have done wrong in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, throwing him into the dungeon. He will surely die of hunger in the place where he is, for there is no more bread in the city.”

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take with you thirty men from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.”

11 So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went to the king’s house, under the treasury, and took from there some old, torn rags and pieces of old clothes, and let them down to Jeremiah in the dungeon by ropes.

12 And Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put these old, torn, rotten rags into the hollows of your arms, under the ropes.” And Jeremiah did so.

13 And they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes, and brought him out of the dungeon; and Jeremiah was left in the courtyard of the guard.

14 Then King Zedekiah sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought before him to the third entrance, which was the house of the Lord; and the king said to Jeremiah, “I ask you one thing; do not hide anything from me.”

15 And Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you surely not kill me? And if I give you advice, will you listen to me?”

16 Then King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah secretly, saying, “As the Lord lives, who made us this soul, I will not kill you nor deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life will be spared, and this city will not be burned down, and you and your household will live.

18 But if you do not go out to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it down, and you will not escape from their hands.’”

19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Chaldeans; they will hand me over to them and make a mockery of me.”

20 Jeremiah said, “They will not hand you over. Now listen to the voice of the Lord, which I speak to you, and it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.”

21 But if you do not want to leave, this is the word that the Lord showed me:

22 Behold, all the women who remain in the house of the king of Judah will be taken to the princes of the king of Babylon, and they themselves will say: Your peacemakers incited you and prevailed against you, and now that your feet are stuck in the mud, they have turned back.

23 So they will take all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans, and you will not escape from their hand, but you will be taken prisoner by the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn this city with fire.

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah: Let no one know these words, and you will not die.

25 And when the princes hear that I have spoken with you, and they come to you and say to you: Tell us now what you said to the king, do not hide it from us, and we will not kill you; and what did the king say to you?

26 Then you shall say to them, “I have made my plea before the king, that he would not make me return to the house of Jonathan, to die there.”

27 So all the princes came to Jeremiah and questioned him, and he told them according to all the words that the king had commanded him; and they let him go, because the matter was not revealed.

28 And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken, and he was still there when Jerusalem was taken.

8 Logo Ebede-Meleque saiu da casa do rei; e falou ao rei, dizendo:

9 Ó rei, senhor meu, mal fizeram estes homens em tudo quanto fizeram a Jeremias, o profeta, lançando-o no calabouço: de certo morreria à fome no lugar onde se acha, pois não há mais pão na cidade.

10 Então deu ordem o rei a Ebede-Meleque, o etíope, dizendo: Toma contigo daqui trinta homens, e tira a Jeremias, o profeta, do calabouço, antes que morra.

11 E tomou Ebede-Meleque os homens consigo, e foi à casa do rei, por debaixo da tesouraria, e tomou dali uns trapos velhos e rotos, e roupas velhas em bocados, e desceu-os a Jeremias no calabouço por meio de cordas.

12 E disse Ebede-Meleque, o etíope, a Jeremias: Põe agora estes trapos velhos e rotos, já apodrecidos, nas covas dos teus braços, por debaixo das cordas. E Jeremias o fez assim.

13 E puxaram a Jeremias com as cordas, e o tiraram do calabouço; e ficou Jeremias no átrio da guarda.

14 Então enviou o rei Zedequias, e fez vir à sua presença Jeremias, o profeta, à terceira entrada, que estava na casa do Senhor; e disse o rei a Jeremias: Pergunto-te uma coisa, não me encubras nada.

15 E disse Jeremias a Zedequias: Declarando-ta eu, com certeza não me matarás? E, aconselhando-te eu, ouvir-me-ás?

16 Então jurou o rei Zedequias a Jeremias, em segredo, dizendo: Vive o Senhor, que nos fez esta alma, que não te matarei nem te entregarei na mão destes homens que procuram a tua morte.

17 Então Jeremias disse a Zedequias: Assim diz o Senhor, Deus dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Se voluntariamente saíres, aos príncipes do rei de Babilônia, então viverá a tua alma, e esta cidade não se queimará a fogo, e viverás tu e a tua casa.

18 Mas, se não saíres aos príncipes do rei de Babilônia, então será entregue esta cidade na mão dos caldeus, e eles a queimarão a fogo, e tu não escaparás da mão deles.

19 E disse o rei Zedequias a Jeremias: Receio-me dos judeus, que se passaram para os caldeus; que me entreguem na sua mão, e escarneçam de mim.

20 E disse Jeremias: Não te entregarão ouve, te peço, a voz do Senhor, conforme a qual eu te falo; e bem te irá, e viverá a tua alma.

21 Mas, se tu não quiseres sair, esta é a palavra que me mostrou o Senhor:

22 Eis que todas as mulheres que ficaram na casa do rei de Judá serão levadas aos príncipes do rei de Babilônia, e elas mesmo dirão: Os teus pacificadores te incitaram e prevaleceram contra ti, e agora que se atolaram os teus pés na lama, voltaram atrás.

23 Assim que a todas as tuas mulheres e a teus filhos levarão aos caldeus, e tu não escaparás da sua mão, antes pela mão do rei de Babilônia, serás preso, e esta cidade ele queimará a fogo.

24 Então disse Zedequias a Jeremias: Ninguém saiba estas palavras, e não morrerás.

1 Now Zedekiah son of Josiah reigned in place of Jeconiah son of Jehoiachin, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made king in the land of Judah.

2 But neither he nor his officials nor the people listened to the words of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.

3 Then King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Pray now to the Lord our God for us.”

4 Jeremiah went in and out among the people, for he had not been put in prison.

5 Pharaoh’s army went out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this news, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

7 Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire: Behold, the army of Pharaoh, which came out to help you, will return to its own land in Egypt.

8 And the Chaldeans shall return and fight against this city, and they shall take it and burn it with fire.

9 Thus says the Lord: Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely leave us,” for they will not leave.

10 For even if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and only men were left slain, each one would rise up in his tent and burn this city with fire.

11 Now it came to pass, that the army of the Chaldeans went up out of Jerusalem because of the army of Pharaoh,

12 that Jeremiah went out out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to receive his portion among the people.

13 And he was at the Benjamin Gate, where a captain of the guard was, whose name was Jeriah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah: and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou hast fled unto the Chaldeans.

14 And Jeremiah said, That is false, I am not fleeing unto the Chaldeans. But he would not listen to him; and Jeriah took Jeremiah and brought him to the princes.

15 And the princes were very angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him down, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made it a prison.

16 So Jeremiah went into the dungeon and remained in his cells for many days.

17 Then King Zedekiah sent and released him. The king secretly asked him in his house, “Is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah replied, “There is.” He also said, “You will be handed over to the king of Babylon.”

18 Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What have I done to you, your officials, or this people, that you have put me in prison?

19 Where are your prophets now, who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?”

20 Now therefore, hear now, my lord the king: let my plea be before you; do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.

21 Then King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be put in the courtyard of the guard; and they gave him a loaf of bread daily from the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

1 E reinou o rei Zedequias, filho de Josias, em lugar de Jeconias, filho de Joaquim, a quem Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, constitui rei na terra de Judá.

2 Mas nem ele, nem os seus servos, nem o povo deram ouvidos às palavras do Senhor que falou pelo ministério de Jeremias, o profeta.

3 Contudo mandou o rei Zedequias a Jeucal, filho de Selemias, e a Sofonias, filho de Maaséias, o sacerdote, ao profeta Jeremias, para lhe dizerem: Roga agora por nós ao Senhor nosso Deus.

4 E entrava e saía Jeremias entre o povo, porque não o tinham encerrado na prisão.

5 E o exército de Faraó saiu do Egito e, ouvindo os caldeus, que tinham sitiado Jerusalém, esta notícia, retiraram-se de Jerusalém.

6 Então veio a Jeremias o profeta, a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

7 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Assim direis ao rei de Judá, que vos enviou a mim, para se informar: Eis que o exército de Faraó, que saiu em vosso socorro, voltará para a sua terra no Egito.

8 E voltarão os caldeus, e pelejarão contra esta cidade, e a tomarão, e a queimarão a fogo.

9 Assim diz o Senhor: Não enganeis as vossas almas, dizendo: Sem dúvida se irão os caldeus de nós: porque não se irão.

10 Porque ainda que ferísseis a todo o exército dos caldeus, que peleja contra vós, e ficassem deles apenas homens transpassados, cada um se levantaria na sua tenda, e queimaria a fogo esta cidade.

11 E sucedeu que, subindo de Jerusalém o exército dos caldeus, por causa do exército de Faraó,

12 Saiu Jeremias de Jerusalém, a fim de ir à terra de Benjamim, para receber a sua parte no meio do povo.

13 E estando ele à porta de Benjamim, achava-se ali um capitão da guarda, cujo nome era Jerias, filho de Selemias, filho de Hananias: o qual prendeu a Jeremias, o profeta, dizendo: Tu foges para os caldeus.

14 E Jeremias disse: Isso é falso, não fujo para os caldeus. Mas ele não lhe deu ouvidos; e assim Jerias prendeu a Jeremias, e o levou aos príncipes.

15E os príncipes se iraram muito contra Jeremias, e o feriram; e o puseram na prisão, na casa de Jonatã, o escrivão; porque a tinham transformado em cárcere.

16 Entrando pois Jeremias na casa do calabouço, e nas suas celas, ficou ali Jeremias muitos dias.

17 E mandou o rei Zedequias soltá-lo e o rei lhe perguntou em sua casa, em segredo, dizendo: Há alguma palavra do Senhor? E disse Jeremias: Há. E disse ainda: Na mão do rei de Babilônia serás entregue.

18 Disse mais Jeremias ao rei Zedequias: Em que tenho pecado contra ti, e contra os teus servos, e contra este povo, para que me pusésseis na prisão?

19 Onde estão agora os vossos profetas, que vos profetizavam, dizendo: O rei de Babilônia não virá contra vós nem contra esta terra?

20 Ora pois ouve agora, ó rei, meu senhor: caia agora a minha súplica diante de ti; não me deixes tornar á casa de Jonatã, o escriba, para que não venha a morrer ali.

21 Então ordenou o rei Zedequias que pusessem a Jeremias no átrio da guarda; e deram-lhe um bolo de pão cada dia, da rua dos padeiros, até que se acabou todo o pão da cidade: Assim ficou Jeremias no átrio da guarda.

1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord:

2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until now.

3 Perhaps the people of Judah will hear about all the evil I intend to do to them, so that each of them may turn from their wicked ways, and I may forgive their wickedness and their sin.

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote down at Jeremiah’s word all the words the Lord had revealed to him in a scroll.

5 Then Jeremiah gave orders to Baruch, saying, “I am shut in; I cannot go into the house of the Lord.”

6 Then you go in and read from the scroll that you wrote at my command the words of the Lord in the hearing of the people in the house of the Lord on the day of fasting; and you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

7 Perhaps their supplication will fall before the Lord, and each one will turn from his evil way; for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has manifested against this people.

8 So Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet had commanded him as he read from the book of the Lord in the house of the Lord.

9 In the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, a fast was proclaimed before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people who came from the towns of Judah and Jerusalem.

10 So Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entrance of the new gate of the house of the Lord, in the hearing of all the people.

11 Now when Micah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord in that book,

12 He went down to the king’s house, to the scribe’s chamber. And behold, all the princes were sitting there: Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other princes.

13 Then Micah told them all the words that he had heard, and Baruch read them from the book in the hearing of the people.

14 Then all the princes sent Jehudi, son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hushai, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch, son of Neriah, took the scroll in his hand and came to them.

15 Then they said to him, “Sit down now and read it aloud to us.” So Baruch read it aloud to them.

16 And it came to pass, when they heard all these words, that they turned fearfully to one another, and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king all these words.”

17 Then they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now how you wrote all these words from his mouth.”

18 Then Baruch said to them, “He dictated all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them down in the book with ink.”

19 Then the princes said to Baruch, “Go, hide yourselves, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.”

20 Then they went to Jehudi to the king to bring the scroll; and Jehudi took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe and read it in the hearing of the king and in the hearing of all the princes who were around the king.

22 (Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and a firepot was burning before him.)

23 And it came to pass, when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, that the king cut it with a scribe's knife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until the whole scroll was consumed in the fire that was upon the brazier.

24 And neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words were afraid or torn their clothes.

25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah had pleaded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.

26 Then the king gave orders to Jerahmeel son of Hammelech, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord had hidden them.

27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after the king had burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah's rite:

28 Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiachin king of Judah burned.

29 And to Jehoiachin king of Judah you shall say, “Thus says the Lord: ‘You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it, ‘The king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and make man and beast cease from it’?”’”

30Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiachin king of Judah: He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body shall be cast out to the heat of the day, and to the frost of the night.

31 And I will punish him, and his descendants, and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on him, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the evil that I have spoken to them, but they did not listen.

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah, the scribe, who wrote on it at Jeremiah’s utterance all the words of the book that Jehoiachin king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.

2 Toma o rolo de um livro, e escreve nele todas as palavras que te tenho falado de Israel, e de Judá, e de todas as nações, desde o dia em que eu te falei a ti, desde os dias de Josias até hoje.

3 Ouvirão talvez os da casa de Judá todo o mal que eu intento fazer-lhes: para que cada qual se converta do seu mau caminho, e eu perdoe a sua maldade e o seu pecado.

4 Então Jeremias chamou a Baruque, filho de Nerias; e escreveu Baruque da boca de Jeremias todas as palavras do Senhor, que ele lhe tinha revelado, no rolo de um livro.

5 E Jeremias deu ordem a Baruque, dizendo: Eu estou encerrado: não posso entrar na casa do Senhor.

6 Entra pois tu, e lê pelo rolo que escreveste da minha boca as palavras do Senhor aos ouvidos do povo, na casa do Senhor, no dia de jejum; e também aos ouvidos de todo o Judá, que vem das suas cidades, as lerás.

7 Pode ser que caia a sua súplica diante do Senhor, e se converta cada um do seu mau caminho: porque grande, é a ira e o furor que o Senhor tem manifestado contra este povo.

8 E fez Baruque, filho de Nérias, conforme tudo quanto lhe havia ordenado Jeremias, o profeta, lendo naquele livro as palavras do Senhor na casa do Senhor.

9 E aconteceu, no ano quinto de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, no mês nono, que apregoaram jejum diante do Senhor a todo o povo em Jerusalém, como também a todo o povo que vinha das cidades de Judá e Jerusalém.

10 Leu pois Baruque naquele livro as palavras de Jeremias na casa do Senhor, na câmara de Gemarias, filho de Safã, o escriba, no átrio superior, à entrada da porta nova da casa do Senhor, aos ouvidos de todo o povo.

11 E, ouvindo Miquéias, filho de Gemarias, filho de Safã, todas as palavras do Senhor, naquele livro,

12 Desceu à casa do rei, à câmara do escriba. E eis que todos os príncipes estavam ali assentados: Elisama, o escriba, e Delaías, filho de Semaías, e Elnatã, filho de Acbor, e Gemarias, filho de Safã, e Zedequias, filho de Hananias e todos os outros príncipes.

13 E Miquéias anunciou-lhes todas as palavras que ouvira, lendo-as Baruque pelo livro, aos ouvidos do povo.

29 E a Joaquim, rei de Judá, dirás: Assim diz o Senhor: Tu queimaste este rolo, dizendo: Por que escreveste nele anunciando: Certamente virá o rei de Babilônia, e destruirá esta terra e fará cessar nela homens e animais?

30Portanto assim diz o Senhor, acerca de Joaquim, rei de Judá: Não terá quem se assente sobre o trono de Davi, e será lançado o seu cadáver ao calor de dia, e à geada de noite.

31 E visitarei sobre ele, e sobre a sua semente, e sobre os seus servos, a sua iniqüidade; e trarei sobre ele e sobre os moradores de Jerusalém, e sobre os homens de Judá, todo aquele mal que lhes tenho falado, e não ouviram.

32 Tomou pois Jeremias outro rolo, e o deu a Baruque, filho de Nérias, o escrivão, o qual escreveu nele da boca de Jeremias todas as palavras do livro que Joaquim, rei de Judá, tinha queimado no fogo; e ainda se acrescentaram a elas muitas palavras semelhantes.

3 So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, and all their sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;

4 And I brought them to the house of the Lord, to the chamber of the sons of Hanan, son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which is next to the chamber of the princes, which is above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum, the keeper of the portico.

5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups, and said to them, “Drink wine.” 

6 But they said, “We will not drink wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons;

7 You shall not build houses, nor sow seed, nor plant or possess any vineyard; but you shall dwell in tents all your days, that you may live many days on the face of the earth where you are sojournings.’”

8 So we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us; therefore we have not drunk wine all our days, neither we, nor our wives, nor our sons, nor our daughters.

9 Nor have we built houses for our habitation; nor have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed.

10 But we dwell in tents, and so we have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

11 Now it happened that when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up to this land, we said, “Come, let us go to Jerusalem because of the army of the Chaldeans and because of the army of the Syrians.” So we stayed in Jerusalem.

12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:

13 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Will you not receive instruction to listen to my words?’ says the Lord.

14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, who commanded his sons not to drink wine, have been kept, for they have not drunk to this day, but have obeyed the commandment of their father; but I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, and you have not listened to me.’”

15 And I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, “Turn now, every one of you, from your evil way, and amend your doings, and do not follow other gods to serve them, and you shall dwell in the land which I gave to you and to your fathers.” But you did not incline your ear, nor did you obey me.

16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the commandment of their father which he commanded them, but this people have not obeyed me:

17 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them; because I spoke to them, and they did not listen; and I called to them, and they did not answer.”

18 And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and have kept all his commandments, and have done according to all that he commanded you,

19 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: There shall not fail a man of Jonadab the son of Rechab to stand before Me forever.”

9 That each man should set free his male servant and his female servant, both Hebrew men and Hebrew women, so that no one would enslave them, being Jews, their brothers.

10 And all the princes and all the people who had entered into the covenant listened to the covenant that each man should set free his male servant and his female servant, so that no one would enslave them anymore. So they listened and released them.

11 But afterward they changed their minds and brought back the male and female servants whom they had set free, and subjected them to male and female servants.

12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:

13 Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers on the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,

14 “At the end of seven years you shall set free every Hebrew brother who has been sold to you and has served you six years, and you shall set him free from you.” But your fathers did not listen to me or incline their ear to me.

15 And you had today turned back and done what is right in my eyes, proclaiming liberty each to his neighbor; and you had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name.

16 But you have changed and profaned my name, and have returned each to his male servant and each to his female servant, whom you had set free according to your will; and you subjected them to your service, making them your male and female servants.

17 Therefore thus says the Lord: You have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, each to his brother, and each to his neighbor; for behold, I proclaim liberty to you, says the Lord, to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine; and I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

18 And I will deliver up the men who transgressed my covenant, who did not confirm the words of the covenant, which they made before me with the calf, which they divided in two, passing between the two portions.

19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the portions of the calf;

20 I will deliver them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives, and their corpses will be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.

21 And I will deliver even King Zedekiah, king of Judah, and his princes into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives: into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, which has already withdrawn from you.

3 And you shall not escape from his hand; but you shall surely be taken and delivered into his hand. And your eyes shall see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak to you face to face, and you shall go into Babylon.

4 Nevertheless, hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah, king of Judah: Thus says the Lord concerning you: You shall not die by the sword.

5 You shall die in peace, and according to the incinerations of your fathers, the kings before you, so they shall burn you, and they shall lament for you, saying, “Ah, Lord! For I have spoken the word, says the Lord.”

6 And Jeremiah the prophet announced all these words to Zedekiah, king of Judah, in Jerusalem,

7 when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that remained: against Lachish and against Azekah; for these fortified cities were those that remained among the cities of Judah.

1 A palavra que do Senhor veio a Jeremias, quando Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, e todo o seu exército, e todos os reinos da terra, que estavam sob o domínio da sua mão, e todos os povos, pelejavam contra Jerusalém, e contra todas as suas cidades, dizendo:

2 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Vai, e fala a Zedequias, rei de Judá, e dize-lhe: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que eu entrego esta cidade na mão do rei de Babilônia, o qual a queimará a fogo.

3 E tu não escaparás da sua mão; antes de certo serás preso, e serás entregue na sua mão: e teus olhos verão os olhos do rei de Babilônia, e ele te falará boca a boca, e entrarás em Babilônia.

4 Todavia ouve a palavra do Senhor, Ó Zedequias, rei de Judá: assim diz o Senhor de ti: Não morrerás a espada.

5 Em paz morrerás, e conforme as incinerações de teus pais, os reis precedentes, que foram antes de ti, assim te queimarão a ti, e prantear-te-ão, dizendo: Ah! Senhor! Porque eu disse a palavra, diz o Senhor.

1 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, saying:

2 “This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is my name:

3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

4 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that have been overthrown by the batons and the sword:

5 “They have come to fight against the Chaldeans, but I will fill them with the dead bodies of men whom I have struck down in my anger and wrath. For I have hidden my face from this city because of all its wickedness.

6 I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal them and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.”

7 I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and I will rebuild them as they were at the beginning.

8 I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, by which they have sinned against me, and I will forgive all their iniquities, by which they have sinned against me, and by which they have transgressed against me.

9 This city will be to me a name of joy, a praise, and a glory before all the nations of the earth, who hear of all the good that I do for it; and they will be amazed and troubled because of all the good and all the peace that I give to it.

10 Thus says the Lord: In this place (of which you say, “It is desolate, without man or beast”), in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, which are desolate, without man, without inhabitants, and without beast, it will again be heard.

11 The voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, and the voice of those who say, “Praise the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his mercy endures forever,” and of those who bring praise to the house of the Lord; for I will restore the fortunes of the land as at the beginning, says the Lord.

12 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “In this place, which is desolate, without man or beast, and in all its cities, there shall again be a dwelling place for shepherds, who shall make their flocks lie down.

13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the plains, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the outskirts of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, the flocks shall again pass under the hands of the counters, says the Lord.

14 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will fulfill the good word that I spoke to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.

15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. This is the name by which it will be called: The Lord Our Righteousness.

17 For thus says the Lord: ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.

18 Nor shall the Levitical priests lack a man before me to offer burnt offerings and burn grain offerings and sacrifices continually.’”

19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:

20 “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed times,

21 then my covenant with David my servant can also be broken, so that he will not have a descendant to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests who minister before me.

22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me.’

23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah again:

24 “Have you not seen what this people says: ‘The two generations the Lord chose he has now rejected’? They despise my people as though they were not a people to them.”

25 Thus says the Lord: If my covenant of day and night does not stand, and I have not established the ordinances of heaven and earth,

26 then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and of David my servant, so that I will not take from his seed one who will rule over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.
