Jeremiah's letter to the captives in Babylon

 

1 These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent to Jerusalem, to the rest of the elders of the captivity, as well as to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon.

2 (After King Jehoiachin, the queen, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters and smiths of Jerusalem had left),

3 By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah (whom Zedekiah king of Judah had sent to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), saying:

4 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all the exiles I sent captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:

5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.

6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may have sons and daughters; and multiply there, and do not decrease.

7 Seek the peace of the city to which I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its peace you will have peace.

8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets who are among you deceive you, nor your diviners, nor listen to your dreams which you dream:

9 For they are prophesying falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, says the Lord.

10 For thus says the Lord: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place.

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

14 “I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and places where I have driven you,” declares the Lord, “and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.”

15 For you say, 'The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon.'

16 For thus says the Lord concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers, who did not go out with you into captivity;

17 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will send among them the sword, famine, and pestilence, and I will make them like rotten figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad.

18 And I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence; I will give them up to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, and to be a curse, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations whither I have driven them;

19 Therefore they did not listen to my words, declares the Lord, even though I sent my servants the prophets to them, rising early and sending them; but you did not listen, declares the Lord.

20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I sent from Jerusalem to Babylon.

21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you in my name: I will hand them over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will kill them before your very eyes.

22 And all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will curse them, saying, “The Lord make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

23 Because they have committed folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken falsely in my name, things which I did not command them to speak ; and I know it and am a witness to it, declares the Lord.

24 And you shall speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying:

25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have sent letters in your name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, and also to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying:

26 The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada the priest, to be in charge of the house of the Lord over every male demon-possessed man who prophesies, to put him in prison and in the stocks.

27 Now then, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah the Anathothite, who prophesies to you?

28 For this reason he sent us word to Babylon: “The captivity will be long; build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.”

29 Then Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet.

30 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:

31 Send to all the exiles, saying, “This is what the Lord says concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah prophesied to you, though I did not send him, and he has made you trust in lies.

32 Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants; he shall have no one to dwell among this people, and he shall not see the good that I will do to my people, says the Lord, because he has spoken rebellion against the Lord.

1 E estas são as palavras da carta que Jeremias, o profeta enviou a Jerusalém, ao resto dos anciãos do cativeiro, como também aos sacerdotes, e aos profetas, e a todo o povo que Nabucodonosor havia transportado de Jerusalém para Babilônia.

2 (Depois que saíram o rei Jeconias, e a rainha, e os eunucos, e os príncipes de Judá e Jerusalém, e os carpinteiros e ferreiros de Jerusalém),

3 Pela mão de Elasa, filho de Safã, e de Gemarias, filho de Hilquias (os quais Zedequias, rei de Judá, tinha enviado a Babilônia, a Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia), dizendo:

4 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, a todos os que foram transportados, que eu fiz transportar de Jerusalém para Babilônia:

5 Edificai casas e habitai-as; e plantai jardins, e comei o seu fruto.

6 Tomai mulheres e gerai filhos e filhas, e tomai mulheres para vossos filhos, e dai vossas filhas a maridos, para que tenham filhos e filhas; e multiplicai-vos ali, e não vos diminuais.

8 Porque assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Não vos enganem vossos profetas que estão no meio de vós, nem os vossos adivinhos, nem deis ouvidos aos vossos sonhos, que sonhais:

9 Porque eles vos profetizam falsamente em meu nome: não os enviei, diz o Senhor.

10 Porque assim diz o Senhor: Certamente que passados setenta anos em Babilônia, vos visitarei, e cumprirei sobre vós a minha boa palavra, tornando-vos a trazer a este lugar.

11 Porque eu bem sei os pensamentos que penso de vós, diz o Senhor; pensamentos de paz, e não de mal, para vos dar o fim que esperais.

12 Então me invocareis, e ireis, e orareis a mim, e eu vos ouvirei.

13 E buscar-me-eis, e me achareis quando me buscardes de todo o vosso coração.

14 E serei achado de vós, diz o Senhor, e farei voltar os vossos cativos, e congregar-vos-ei de todas as nações, e de todos os lugares para onde vos lancei, diz o Senhor, e tornarei a trazer-vos ao lugar de onde vos transportei.

15 Porque dizeis: O Senhor nos levantou profetas em Babilônia.

16 Porque assim diz o Senhor a respeito do rei que assenta no trono de Davi, e de todo o povo que habita nesta cidade, vossos irmãos, que não saíram convosco para o cativeiro;

17 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eis que enviarei entre eles a espada, a fome e a peste, e fá-los-ei como a figos podres, que não se podem comer, de maus que são.

18 E persegui-los-ei com a espada, com a fome, e com a peste; dá-los-ei para andarem de um lado para outro, entre todos os reinos da terra, e para serem uma maldição, e um espanto, e um assobio, e um opróbrio entre todas as nações para onde os tiver lançado;

19 Portanto não deram ouvidos às minhas palavras, diz o Senhor, enviando-lhes eu os meus servos, os profetas, madrugando e enviando; mas vós não escutastes, diz o Senhor.

20 Vós pois ouvi a palavra do Senhor, todos os do cativeiro que enviei de Jerusalém para Babilônia.

21 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, acerca de Acabe, filho de Colaías, e de Zedequias, filho de Maaséias, que vos profetizam falsamente em meu nome: Eis que os entregarei na mão de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, e ele os ferirá diante dos vossos olhos.

22 E tomarão deles uma maldição todos os transportados de Judá, que estão em Babilônia, dizendo: O Senhor te faça como Zedequias, e como Acabe, os quais o rei de Babilônia assou no fogo;

23 Porquanto fizeram loucura em Israel, e cometeram adultério com as mulheres de seus companheiros, e anunciaram falsamente em meu nome palavras que não lhes mandei dizer; e eu o sei e sou testemunha disso, diz o Senhor.

24 E a Semaías, o neelamita, falarás, dizendo:

25 Assim fala o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, dizendo: Porquanto tu enviaste no teu nome cartas a todo o povo que está em Jerusalém, como também a Sofonias, filho de Maaséias, o sacerdote, e a todos os sacerdotes, dizendo:

26 O Senhor te pôs por sacerdote em lugar de Joiada, o sacerdote, para que sejas encarregado da casa do Senhor sobre todo o homem obsesso, e que profetiza, para o lançares na prisão e no tronco.

27 Agora pois, por que não repreendeste a Jeremias, o anatotita, que vos profetiza?

28 Porque por isso nos mandou dizer para Babilônia: O cativeiro muito há de durar; edificai casas, e habitai-as; e plantai jardins, e comei o seu fruto.

29 E lera Sofonias, o sacerdote, esta carta aos ouvidos de Jeremias, o profeta.

30 E veio a palavra do Senhor a Jeremias, dizendo:

31 Manda a todos os do cativeiro, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor acerca de Semaías, o neelamita: Porquanto Semaías vos profetizou, e eu não o enviei, e vos fez confiar em mentiras.

32 Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Eis que visitarei a Semaías, o neelamita, e a sua descendência: ele não terá ninguém que habite entre este povo, e não verá o bem que hei de fazer ao meu povo, diz o Senhor, porquanto falou em rebelião contra o Senhor.

1 In the same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the sight of the priests and all the people, saying:

2 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

3 After two full years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and carried to Babylon.

4 I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, declares the Lord, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.

5 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord.

6 Jeremiah the prophet said, “Amen! May the Lord do so. May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied and bring back to this place the vessels of the house of the Lord and all the exiles from Babylon.

7 But now listen to this message I am giving you and all the people:

8 The prophets who preceded me and you long ago prophesied war, disaster and pestilence against many lands and great kingdoms.

9 The prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then he shall be known by him whom the Lord has truly sent.

10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.

11 And Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Thus I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations after two full years.’” And Jeremiah the prophet went his way.

12 But the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

13 “Go and speak to Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You have broken wooden yokes, but in their place you shall make yokes of iron.”’”

14 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they shall serve him; and I have even given him the beasts of the field.

15 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Hear now, Hananiah: The Lord has not sent you, but you have made this people trust in a lie.

16 Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will cast you from the face of the earth; this year you shall die, because you have spoken rebellion against the Lord.”

17 And Hananiah the prophet died in the seventh month of that same year.

8 Os profetas que houve antes de mim e antes de ti, desde a antiguidade, profetizaram contra muitas terras, e contra grandes reinos, guerra, e mal, e peste.

2 Thus says the Lord: Make some yokes and put them on your neck.

3 And send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the Ammonites, and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.

4 And you shall give them a message to their masters, saying: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Thus you shall say to your masters:

5 I made the earth, man, and the animals that are on the face of the earth, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and I give it to whomever I please.

6 And now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant; and I have even given him the beasts of the field to serve him.

7 And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his grandson, until the time of his own land comes, when many nations and great kings shall serve him.

8 And it shall come to pass, that if any nation or kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, then I will punish that nation with the sword, and with famine, and with pestilence, says the Lord, until I have consumed them by his hand.

9 And do not listen to your prophets, and to your diviners, and to your dreamers, and to your soothsayers, and to your sorcerers, who speak to you, saying, “You shall not serve the king of Babylon.”

10 For they prophesy lies to you, to drive you far from your land, and that I may cast you out of it, and you may perish.

11 But the nation that puts its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serves him, I will let it remain in its own land, declares the Lord, and it shall cultivate it and dwell in it.

12 And I spoke to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, “Put your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and you shall live.

13 Why should you and your people die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, as the Lord has said concerning the people who will not serve the king of Babylon?”

14 And do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, “You shall not serve the king of Babylon,” for they prophesy lies to you.

15 For I did not send them, declares the Lord, yet they prophesy falsely in my name, so that I may cast you out and you may perish, both you and the prophets who prophesy to you.

16 I also spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, ‘Behold, the vessels of the house of the Lord shall soon return from Babylon,’ for they prophesy lies to you.

17 Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon, and you shall live. Why should this city become a desolate place?

18 But if they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is with them, let them pray now to the Lord of hosts, that the vessels that remain in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem, may not go to Babylon.”

19 For thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the pillars, and the sea, and the bases, and the remaining vessels that are left in the city.

20 Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take with him when he carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon Jeconiah the son of Jehoiachin, king of Judah, and all the nobles of Jerusalem;

2 Thus says the Lord: Stand in the courtyard of the house of the Lord and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not forget a single word.

3 Perhaps they will listen and turn, each from his evil way, and I will relent of the disaster that I intend to bring on them because of the wickedness of their deeds.

4 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law which I have set before you,

5 That you should listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent to you, rising early and sending them, but you did not listen;

6 Then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.

7 And the priests and the prophets and all the people listened to Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.

8 And it came to pass, when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “You shall surely die.

9 For you have prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant.’” And all the people gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

10 When the princes of Judah heard these words, they went up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and sat down at the entrance of the new gate of the Lord.

11 Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and to all the people, saying, “This man is guilty of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.

13 Now therefore, amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God, and the Lord will relent of the evil that he has pronounced against you.

14 As for me, behold, I am in your hands; do with me as is good and right in your eyes.”

15 But know for certain that if you kill me, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you, to speak all these words in your hearing.

16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man is not guilty of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”

17 Then some of the elders of the land stood up and spoke to all the congregation of the people, saying:

18 Micah the Morasite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying: “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the house like the high places of a forest.’”

19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord and plead for the Lord’s favor? Then the Lord relented from the disaster he had pronounced against them, and we are doing great harm to ourselves.

20 There was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord: Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land, according to all the words of Jeremiah.

21 When King Jehoiachin and all his officials and all the princes heard his words, the king sought to kill him. When Uriah heard this, he was afraid and fled to Egypt.

22 But King Jehoiachin sent some men to Egypt, Elnathan son of Achbor and other men with him.

23 So they brought Uriah out of Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiachin, who struck him down with the sword and threw his body into the graves of the common people.

24 Then the hand of Ahikam son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that he would not be handed over to the people to be put to death.

5 “अब तुम में से हर एक अपने बुरे मार्ग और अपने बुरे कामों से फिरकर उस देश में बस जाओ जिसे यहोवा ने तुम्हें और तुम्हारे पूर्वजों को दिया है, और हमेशा-हमेशा के लिए उसमें बसे रहो।

6 दूसरे देवताओं के पीछे मत जाओ, उनकी सेवा या पूजा मत करो, और अपने हाथों के कामों से मुझे गुस्सा मत दिलाओ, ताकि मैं तुम्हें नुकसान न पहुँचाऊँ।

11 और यह सारा देश उजाड़ बंजर हो जाएगा, और ये देश सत्तर साल तक बेबीलोन के राजा की सेवा करेंगे।

12 लेकिन जब सत्तर साल पूरे हो जाएंगे, तो मैं बेबीलोन के राजा और उस देश को उनके गुनाह की सज़ा दूंगा, यहोवा कहता है, और कसदियों के देश को भी; मैं उन्हें हमेशा के लिए उजाड़ कर दूंगा।

13 और मैं इस देश पर अपनी सारी बातें पूरी करूँगा जो मैंने इसके खिलाफ कही हैं, वह सब जो इस किताब में लिखा है, जिसे यिर्मयाह ने इन सभी देशों के खिलाफ भविष्यवाणी की थी।

14 क्योंकि बहुत सी जातियाँ और बड़े-बड़े राजा भी उनकी सेवा करेंगे; इसलिए मैं उन्हें उनके कामों और उनके हाथों के काम के अनुसार बदला दूँगा।

15 क्योंकि इस्राएल का परमेश्वर यहोवा यह कहता है: मेरे हाथ से क्रोध की मदिरा का यह प्याला ले लो, और उन सभी राष्ट्रों को पिलाओ जिनके पास मैं तुम्हें भेजता हूँ।

16 ताकि वे पीकर कांपें और उस तलवार के कारण पागल हो जाएं जो मैं उनके बीच भेजूंगा।

17 तब मैंने यहोवा के हाथ से प्याला लिया और उन सभी राष्ट्रों को पिलाया, जिनके पास यहोवा ने मुझे भेजा था।

23 ददान, तेमा, बूज और पृथ्वी की छोर पर रहने वाले सब लोगों को;

24 और अरब के सब राजाओं को, और जंगल में रहने वाले मिले-जुले लोगों के सब राजाओं को;

25 और जिम्री के सब राजाओं, एलाम के सब राजाओं, और मादै के सब राजाओं को;

26 और उत्तर के सभी राजा, चाहे पास के हों या दूर के, एक दूसरे के साथ, और धरती पर जितने भी राज्य हैं, और शेशक का राजा भी उनके पीछे-पीछे पीएगा।

34 हे चरवाहो, चिल्लाओ और चिल्लाओ; हे झुंड के अगुवों, राख में लोट जाओ, क्योंकि तुम्हारे मारे जाने के दिन आ गए हैं, और मैं तुम्हें तोड़ डालूंगा, और तुम एक कीमती बर्तन की तरह गिर जाओगे।

35 और चरवाहों के लिए कोई बचने का रास्ता नहीं होगा, न ही झुंड के अगुवों के लिए कोई बचाव होगा।

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah (which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon),

2 Which the prophet Jeremiah announced to all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying:

3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until this day (which is the twenty-third year), the word of the Lord came to me, and I proclaimed it to you, rising early and speaking; but you did not listen.

4 The Lord also sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them (but you did not listen or incline your ears to hear),

5 Saying, “Turn now, each of you, from your evil way and from the wickedness of your deeds, and dwell in the land that the Lord gave to you and to your fathers forever and ever;

6 Do not go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and do not provoke me to anger with the work of your hands, so that I do not harm you.

7 Yet you did not listen to me, declares the Lord, but you provoked me to anger with the work of your hands, to your own harm.

8 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: Because you have not listened to my words.

9 Behold, I will send and take all the generations of the north, says the Lord, even Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations, and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment and a hissing, and a perpetual wasteland.

10 And I will cause to perish among them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.

11 And this whole land shall become a desolate wasteland, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

12 But it shall come to pass, when seventy years are fulfilled, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, says the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; I will make them a perpetual desolation.

13 And I will bring upon this land all my words that I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all these nations.

14 For many nations and great kings will also serve them; so I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.

15 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.

16 So that they may drink and tremble and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them.

17 Then I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations drink, to whom the Lord had sent me.

18 To Jerusalem, and to the cities of Judah, and to their kings, and to their princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is this day:

19 To Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his servants, and to his princes, and to all his people;

20 And to all the mixed multitude, and to all the kings of the land of Uz, and to all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and to Ashkelon, and to Gaza, and to Ekron, and to the remnant of Ashdod,

21E to Edom, and to Moab, and to the children of Ammon;

22 And to all the kings of Tyre, and to all the kings of Sidon, and to the kings of the islands beyond the sea;

23 To Dedan, and to Tema, and to Buz, and to all who dwell in the uttermost parts of the earth;

24 And to all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed people who dwell in the desert;

25 And to all the kings of Zimri, and to all the kings of Elam, and to all the kings of Media:

26 And all the kings of the north, those near and those far away, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the earth that are on the face of the earth, and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.

27 For you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink and be drunk, and vomit, and fall down, and do not rise again, because of the sword that I will send among you.’

28 And if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: You shall surely drink.’

29 For behold, I begin to punish the city which is called by my name; and shall you go unpunished? No, you shall not go unpunished, for I am calling for a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts.

30 You shall prophesy all these words to them, and say to them: “The Lord will roar from on high and utter his voice from his holy dwelling place; he will roar mightily against his dwelling place, with a shout of joy, like those who tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.”

31 The sound will reach to the ends of the earth, for the Lord has a controversy with the nations; he will enter into judgment with all flesh; he will give the wicked to the sword, says the Lord.

32 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, evil goes forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest shall arise from the ends of the earth.

33 And the slain of the Lord on that day shall be from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth: they shall not be mourned, nor gathered, nor buried; but they shall be like dung on the face of the earth.

34 Howl, you shepherds, and cry out; roll yourselves in ashes, you leaders of the flock, for your days to be slaughtered have come, and I will break you, and you will fall like a precious vessel.

35 And there will be no escape for the shepherds, nor rescue for the leaders of the flock.

36 The voice of the shepherds crying out, and the howling of the leaders of the flock; for the Lord has destroyed their pasture.

37 For their peaceful flocks will be uprooted because of the fierce anger of the Lord.

38 He has abandoned his dwelling place like a young lion; for his land has been laid waste because of the fury of the oppressor, and because of the fierceness of his wrath.

1 A palavra que veio a Jeremias acerca de todo o povo de Judá no ano quarto de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá (que é o primeiro ano de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia),

2 A qual anunciou o profeta Jeremias a todo o povo de Judá, e a todos os habitantes de Jerusalém, dizendo:

3 Desde o ano treze de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá, até este dia (que é o ano vinte e três), veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, e vo-la anunciei a vós, madrugando e falando; mas vós não escutastes.

4 Também vos enviou o Senhor todos os seus servos, os profetas, madrugando e enviando-os (mas vós não escutastes, nem inclinastes os vossos ouvidos para ouvir),

5 Dizendo: Convertei-vos agora cada um do seu mau caminho, e da maldade das suas ações, e habitai na terra que o Senhor vos deu e a vossos pais, de século em século;

6 E não andeis após deuses alheios para os servirdes, e para vos inclinardes diante deles, nem me provoqueis à ira com a obra de vossas mãos, para que vos não faça mal.

7 Todavia não me destes ouvidos, diz o Senhor, mas que provocastes à ira com a obra de vossas mãos, para vosso mal.

8 Portanto assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Visto que não escutastes as minhas palavras.

9 Eis que eu enviarei, e tomarei a todas as gerações do norte, diz o Senhor, como também a Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, meu servo, e os trarei sobre esta terra, e sobre os seus moradores, e sobre todas estas nações em redor, e os destruirei totalmente, e pô-los-ei em espanto, e em assobio, e em perpétuos desertos.

10 E farei perecer entre eles a voz de folguedo, e a voz de alegria, a voz do esposo, e a voz da esposa, o som das mós, e a luz do candeeiro.

11 E toda esta terra virá a ser um deserto e um espanto; e estas nações servirão ao rei de Babilônia setenta anos.

12 Acontecerá porém que, quando se cumprirem os setenta anos, visitarei o rei de Babilônia, e esta nação, diz o Senhor, castigando a sua iniqüidade, e a da terra dos caldeus; farei deles uns desertos perpétuos.

13 E trarei sobre esta terra todas as minhas palavras, que disse contra ela, tudo quanto está escrito neste livro, que profetizou Jeremias contra todas estas nações.

14 Porque também deles se servirão muitas nações e grandes reis: assim lhes retribuirei segundo os seus feitos, e segundo as obras das suas mãos.

15 Porque assim me disse o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: Toma da minha mão este copo do vinho do furor, e darás a beber dele a todas as nações, às quais eu te enviar.

16 Para que bebam e tremam, e enlouqueçam, por causa da espada, que eu enviarei entre eles.

17 E tomei o copo da mão do Senhor, e dei a beber a todas as nações, às quais o Senhor me tinha enviado:

18 A Jerusalém, e às cidades de Judá, e aos seus reis, e aos seus príncipes, para fazer deles um deserto, um espanto, um assobio, e uma maldição, como hoje se vê:

19 A Faraó, rei do Egito, e a seus servos, e a seus príncipes, e a todo o seu povo;

20 E a toda a mistura de gente, e a todos os reis da terra de Uz, e a todos os reis da terra dos filisteus, e a Asquelom, e a Gaza, e a Ecrom, e ao resto de Asdode,

21E a Edom, e a Moabe, e aos filhos de Amom;

22 E a todos os reis de Tiro, e a todos os reis de Sidom; e aos reis das ilhas de além do mar;

23 A Dedã, e a Temá, e a Buz e a todos os que habitam nos últimos cantos da terra;

24 E a todos os reis da Arábia, e todos os reis do misturado povo que habita no deserto;

25 E a todos os reis de Zinri, e a todos os reis de Elão, e a todos os reis da Média:

26 E a todos os reis do norte, os de perto, e os de longe, um com outro, e a todos os reinos da terra, que estão sobre a face da terra, e o rei de Sesaque beberá depois deles.

27 Pois lhes dirás: Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Bebei e embebedai-vos, e vomitai, e caí, e não torneis a levantar-vos, por causa da espada que eu vos enviarei.

28 E será que, se não quiserem tomar o copo da tua mão para beber, então lhes dirás: Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Certamente bebereis.

29 Porque, eis que na cidade que se chama pelo meu nome começo a castigar; e ficareis vós totalmente impunes? Não, não ficareis impunes, porque eu chamo a espada sobre todos os moradores da terra, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.

30 Tu pois lhes profetizarás todas estas palavras, e lhes dirás: O Senhor desde o alto bramirá e fará ouvir a sua voz desde a morada da sua santidade: terrivelmente bramirá contra a sua habitação, com grito de alegria, como dos que pisam as uvas, contra todos os moradores da terra.

31 Chegará o estrondo até à extremidade da terra, porque o Senhor tem contenda com as nações, entrará em juízo com toda a carne: os ímpios entregará à espada, diz o Senhor.

32 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eis que o mal sai de nação para nação, e grande tormenta se levantará dos confins da terra.

33 E serão os mortos do Senhor, naquele dia, desde uma extremidade da terra até à outra extremidade da terra: não serão pranteados, nem recolhidos, nem sepultados; mas serão como estrume sobre a face da terra.

34 Uivai, pastores, e clamai, e rebolai-vos na cinza, principais do rebanho, porque já se cumpriram os vossos dias para serdes mortos, e eu vos quebrantarei, e vós então caireis como um vaso precioso.

35 E não haverá fugida para os pastores, nem salvamento para os principais do rebanho.

36 Voz de grito dos pastores, e uivo dos principais do rebanho; porque o Senhor destruiu o pasto deles.

37 Porque as suas malhadas pacíficas serão desarraigadas, por causa do furor da ira do Senhor.

38 Desamparou a sua cabana, como o filho do leão; porque a sua terra foi posta em assolação, por causa do furor do opressor, e por causa do furor da sua ira.
