1 A palavra do Senhor, que veio a Jeremias, dizendo:

2 Levanta-te, e desce à casa do oleiro, e lá te farei ouvir as minhas palavras.

3 E desci à casa do oleiro, e eis que ele estava fazendo a sua obra sobre as rodas.

4 Como o vaso, que ele fazia de barro, se quebrou na mão do oleiro, tornou a fazer dele outro vaso, conforme o que pareceu bem aos seus olhos fazer.

5 Então veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

6 Não poderei eu fazer de vós como fez este oleiro, ó casa de Israel? Diz o Senhor: eis que, como o barro na mão do oleiro, assim sois vós na minha mão, ó casa de Israel.

7 No momento em que falar contra uma nação, e contra um reino para arrancar, e para derrubar, e para destruir.

8 Se a tal nação, contra a qual falar, se converter da sua maldade, também eu me arrependerei do mal que pensava fazer-lhe.

9 E no momento em que falar de uma gente e de um reino, para edificar e para plantar,

10 Se ela fizer o mal diante dos meus olhos, não dando ouvidos à minha voz, então me arrependerei do bem que tinha dito lhe faria.

11 Ora pois, fala agora aos homens de Judá, e aos moradores de Jerusalém, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que estou forjando mal contra vós, e projeto um plano contra vós; convertei-vos pois agora cada um do seu mau caminho, e melhorai os vossos caminhos e as vossas ações.

12 Mas eles dizem: Não há esperança, porque após as nossas imaginações andaremos: e fará cada um segundo o propósito do seu malvado coração.

13 Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Perguntai agora entre os gentios quem ouviu tal coisa? Coisa mui horrenda fez a virgem de Israel!

14 Porventura deixar-se-á a neve do Líbano por uma rocha do campo? Ou deixar-se-ão as águas estranhas, frias e correntes?

15 Contudo o meu povo se tem esquecido de mim, queimando incenso à vaidade; e fizeram-nos tropeçar nos seus caminhos, e nas veredas afastadas, não aplainadas;

16 Para fazerem da sua terra um espanto e uma irrisão perpétua; todo aquele que passar por ela se espantará, e meneará a sua cabeça.

17 Com vento oriental os espalharei diante da face do inimigo: mostrar-lhes-ei as costas e não o rosto, no dia da sua perdição.

18 Então disseram: Vinde, e maquinemos projetos contra Jeremias; porquanto não perecerá a lei do sacerdote, nem o conselho do sábio, nem a palavra do profeta: vinde, e firamo-lo com a língua, e não escutemos nenhuma das suas palavras.

19 Olha para mim, Senhor, e ouve a voz dos que contendem comigo.

20 Porventura pagar-se-á mal por bem? Pois cavaram uma cova para a minha alma: lembra-te de que eu compareci na tua presença, para falar por seu bem, para desviar deles a tua indignação.

21 Portanto entrega seus filhos à fome, e entrega-os ao poder da espada, e sejam suas mulheres roubadas dos filhos, e fiquem viúvas; e seus maridos sejam feridos à espada na peleja.

22 Ouça-se o clamor de suas casas, quando trouxeres esquadrões sobre eles de repente. Portanto cavaram uma cova para prender-me e armaram laços aos meus pés.

19 Thus said the Lord to me: “Go and stand at the gate of the people, through which the kings of Judah enter and through which they go out, and at all the gates of Jerusalem.

20 And say to them: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem who enter by these gates.

21 Thus says the Lord: Take heed to yourselves, and do not carry burdens on the Sabbath day, nor bring them in by the gates of Jerusalem.

22 Nor carry burdens out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers.

23 But they did not listen or incline their ears; instead, they stiffened their necks, so that they would not hear or receive correction.’”

 24 “Therefore, if you diligently listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and do not bring in loads through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy by not doing any work on it,

25 then kings and princes who sit on the throne of David will enter through the gates of this city, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city will be inhabited forever.

26 And they will come from the cities of Judah and from the outskirts of Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plains, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices and grain offerings and incense, bringing also sacrifices of thanksgiving to the house of the Lord.” 

27 But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to carry any load when you enter the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, which will consume the palaces of Jerusalem, and it will not be quenched.

19 Assim me disse o Senhor: Vai, e põe-te à porta dos filhos do povo, pela qual entram os reis de Judá, e pela qual saem; como também a todas as portas de Jerusalém.

20 E dize-lhes: Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, vós, reis de Judá e todo o Judá, e todos os moradores de Jerusalém, que entrais por estas portas.

21 Assim diz o Senhor: Guardai as vossas almas, e não tragais cargas no dia de sábado, nem as introduzais pelas portas de Jerusalém.

22 Nem tireis cargas de vossas casas no dia de sábado, nem façais obra alguma: antes santificai o dia de sábado, como eu ordenei a vossos pais.

23 Mas não deram ouvidos, nem inclinaram as suas orelhas; antes endureceram a sua cerviz, para não ouvirem, e para não receberem correção.

24 Será pois que, se diligentemente me ouvirdes, diz o Senhor, não introduzindo cargas pelas portas desta cidade no dia de sábado, e santificardes o dia de sábado, não fazendo nele obra alguma;

25 Então entrarão pelas portas desta cidade reis e príncipes, assentados sobre o trono de Davi, andando em carros e montados em cavalos, eles e seus príncipes, os homens de Judá, e os moradores de Jerusalém: e esta cidade será para sempre habitada.

26 E virão das cidades de Judá, e dos contornos de Jerusalém, e da terra de Benjamim, e das planícies, e das montanhas, e do sul, trazendo holocaustos, e sacrifícios, e ofertas de manjares, e incenso, trazendo igualmente sacrifícios de louvores à casa do Senhor.

27 Mas, se não me derdes ouvidos, para santificardes o dia de sábado, e para não trazerdes carga alguma, quando entrardes pelas portas de Jerusalém no dia de sábado, então acenderei fogo nas suas portas o qual consumirá os palácios de Jerusalém, e não se apagará.

1 The sin of Judah is written with an iron pen, with a diamond point, engraved on the tablet of their hearts and on the horns of their altars.

2 Even their children remember their altars, and their groves, and the green trees on the high hills.

3 O my mountain in the field! I will give your wealth and all your treasures as plunder, as well as your high places, because of sin, throughout all your borders.

4 Thus you will deprive yourself of your inheritance that I gave you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land you do not know; for the fire you kindled in my anger will burn forever.

5 Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord!

6 For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; 6 But he will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land that is not inhabited.

7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in the Lord.

8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, that spreads out its roots by the river, and does not fear when heat comes, but its leaf remains green; and in the year of drought it is not anxious, nor does it cease to bear fruit.

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

11 As a partridge that gathers eggs that it does not hatch, so is he who amasses riches unjustly; in the midst of his days they will leave him, and at his end he will be a fool.

12 A throne of glory, set high from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary. 

13 O Lord, the hope of Israel! All who have forsaken you will be put to shame; those who turn away from me will be written in the dust, because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water.

14 Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for you are my praise.

15 Behold, they say to me, “Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come now!”

16 But I did not hasten to be a shepherd after you, nor did I desire the day of trouble; you know it. What came from my lips is before your face.

17 Do not be a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of trouble.

18 Let those who persecute me be put to shame, but let me not be put to shame; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed. Bring on them the day of trouble, and destroy them with double destruction.

7 Bendito o varão que confia no Senhor, e cuja esperança é o Senhor.

8 Porque será como a árvore plantada junto às águas, que estende as suas raízes para o ribeiro, e não receia quando vem o calor, mas a sua folha fica verde; e no ano de sequidão não se afadiga, nem deixa de dar fruto.

9 Enganoso é o coração, mais do que todas as coisas, e perverso: quem o conhecerá?

10 Eu, o Senhor, esquadrilho o coração, eu provo os rins: e isto para dar a cada um segundo os seus caminhos e segundo o fruto das suas ações.

11 Como perdiz que ajunta ovos que não choca, assim é aquele que ajunta riquezas, mas não retamente; no meio de seus dias as deixará, e no seu fim se fará um insensato.

12 Um trono de glória, posto bem alto desde o princípio, é o lugar do nosso santuário.

13 Ó Senhor, Esperança de Israel! Todos aqueles que te deixaram serão envergonhados: os que se apartam de mim serão escritos sobre a terra; porque abandonam o Senhor, a fonte das águas vivas.

14 Sara-me, Senhor, e sararei: salva-me, e serei salvo; porque tu és o meu louvor.

15 Eis que eles me dizem: Onde está a palavra do Senhor? Venha agora.

Prediction of the Captivity and Deliverance of Israel

1 The word of the Lord came to me:

2 “You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters born in this place.

3 For thus says the Lord concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, concerning their mothers who bear them, and concerning their fathers who beget them in this land:

4 They shall die of grievous diseases, and they shall not be mourned or buried; they shall be like dung on the ground; they shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.

5 For thus says the Lord: “Do not enter the house of mourning, nor go to lament, nor show them any pity, for from this people,” says the Lord, “I have withdrawn my peace, my kindness, and my mercy.”

6 Great and small shall die in this land, and they shall not be buried, nor shall they mourn, nor shall they make incisions for them, nor shall they shave their heads.

7 And no one shall give them any sorrow, to comfort them because of death; nor shall they give them the cup of consolation to drink, for anyone’s father or for anyone’s mother.

8 Do not enter the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and drink.

9 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will cause to cease in this place before your eyes and in your days the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

10 And it shall come to pass, when you tell this people all these words, and they say to you, “Why has the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? And what is our iniquity, and what is our sin, that we have sinned against the Lord our God?” 

11 Then you shall say to them, ‘Because your fathers have forsaken me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and have gone after other gods and served them and worshiped them, and have forsaken me and not kept my law.’

12 And you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, each of you walks after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so as not to listen to me.

13 Therefore I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known; and there you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no mercy.

14 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought the children of Israel up out of the land of Egypt,’

15 but, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought the children of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where he had driven them,’ Because I will bring them back to their land, which I gave to their fathers.

16 Behold, I will send for many fishermen, says the Lord, and they shall fish for them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them down on every mountain and on every hill, and even in the clefts of the rocks.

17 For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my face, nor is their wickedness concealed from my eyes.

18 And first I will repay them double for their wickedness and their sin, because they have defiled my land with the carcasses of their detestable things, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations.

19 O Lord, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of trouble! To you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth, and say, “Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols, in which there is no profit.”

20 Will a man make for himself gods, which are not gods?

21Therefore, behold, I will make them know, this time I will make them know my hand and my power, and they shall know that my name is the Lord.

1 E veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

2 Não tomarás para ti mulher, nem terás filhos nem filhas que nascerem neste lugar.

3 Porque assim diz o Senhor, acerca dos filhos e das filhas que nascerem neste lugar, acerca de suas mães, que os tiverem, e de seus pais que os gerarem nesta terra.

4 Morrerão de enfermidades dolorosas, e não serão pranteados nem sepultados: servirão de esterco para a terra; e pela espada e pela fome serão consumidos, e os seus cadáveres servirão de mantimento às aves do céu e aos animais da terra.

5 Porque assim diz o Senhor: Não entres na casa do luto, nem vás a lamentar, nem te compadeças deles: porque deste povo, diz o Senhor, retirei a minha paz, benignidade e misericórdia.

6 E morrerão grandes e pequenos nesta terra, e não serão sepultados, e não prantearão nem se farão por eles incisões, nem por eles se raparão os cabelos.

7 E nada se lhes dará por dó, para consolá-los por causa de morte; nem lhes darão a beber do copo de consolação, pelo pai de alguém, ou pela mãe de alguém.

8 Nem entres na casa do banquete, para te assentares com eles a comer e a beber.

9 Porque assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, O Deus de Israel: Eis que farei cessar neste lugar perante os vossos olhos, e em vossos dias, a voz de gozo e a voz de alegria, a voz do esposo e a voz da esposa.

10 E será que, quando anunciares a este povo todas estas palavras, e eles te disserem: Por que pronuncia o Senhor sobre nós todo esse grande mal? E qual é a nossa iniqüidade, e qual é o nosso pecado, que pecamos contra o Senhor nosso Deus?

11 Então lhes dirás: Porquanto vossos pais me deixaram, diz o Senhor, e se foram após deuses alheios, e os serviram, e se inclinaram diante deles, e a mim me deixaram, e a minha lei não guardaram.

12 E vós fizestes pior do que vossos pais, porque, eis que cada um de vós anda após o propósito do seu malvado coração, para me não dar ouvidos a mim.

13 Portanto lançar-vos-ei fora desta terra, para uma terra que não conhecestes, nem vós nem vossos pais; e ali servireis a deuses estranhos de dia e de noite, porque não usarei de misericórdia convosco.

14 Portanto, eis que dias vêm, diz o Senhor, em que nunca mais se dirá: Vive o Senhor, que fez subir os filhos de Israel da terra do Egito.

15 Mas: Vive o Senhor, que fez subir os filhos de Israel da terra do norte, e de todas as terras para onde os tinha lançado; porque eu os farei voltar à sua terra, que dei a seus pais.

16 Eis que mandarei muitos pescadores, diz o Senhor, os quais os pescarão; e depois enviarei muitos caçadores, os quais os caçarão sobre todo o monte, e sobre todo o outeiro, e até nas fendas das rochas.

17 Porque os meus olhos estão sobre todos os seus caminhos; não se escondem perante a minha face, nem a sua maldade se encobre aos meus olhos.

18 E primeiramente retribuirei em dobro a sua maldade e o seu pecado, porque profanaram a minha terra com os cadáveres das suas coisas detestáveis, e das suas abominações encheram a minha herança.

19 Ó Senhor, fortaleza minha, e força minha, e refúgio meu no dia da angústia! A ti virão as nações desde os fins da terra, e dirão: Nossos pais herdaram só mentiras, e vaidade, em que não havia proveito.

20 Fará um homem para si deuses, que contudo não são deuses?

21Portanto, eis que lhes farei conhecer, desta vez lhes farei conhecer a minha mão e o meu poder, e saberão que o meu nome é o Senhor.

1 But the Lord said to me, “Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not be with this people. Send them away from my presence, and let them go.”

2 And when they say to you, “Where shall we go?” you shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Those destined for death, to death; those destined for the sword, to the sword; those destined for famine, to famine; and those destined for captivity, to captivity.’”

3 For I will punish them with four kinds of plagues, declares the Lord: with the sword to kill, with dogs to drag them away, with the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy them.

4 I will make them a fugitive among all the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for all that he did in Jerusalem.

5 For who would have pity on you, O Jerusalem? Or who would grieve for you? Or who would turn aside to ask for your peace?

6 You have forsaken me, says the Lord, you have turned away; therefore I will stretch out my hand against you and destroy you; I am weary of relenting.

7 And I will winnow them with a winnowing fork at the gates of the land; I have bereaved them, I have destroyed my people; they have not returned from their ways.

8 Her widows have become more numerous than the sands of the sea; I have brought a destroyer at midday upon the mother of the young men; I have caused him to fall suddenly upon her, and to fill the city with terrors.

9 She who bore seven children is weak; her soul expires; her sun has set while it is still day; she is confounded and ashamed; and those who remain of her I will give to the sword before their enemies, says the Lord.

10 Woe is me, my mother! Why did you give birth to me, a man of strife and a man of contention to all the earth? I have never lent to them at interest, nor have they lent to me at interest, yet each of them curses me.

11 The Lord says: Surely I will strengthen you for good, and in the time of calamity and in the time of distress I will cause the enemy to plead with you.

12 Can anyone break iron, iron from the north, or steel?

13 I will give your wealth and your treasures as plunder without price, because of all your sins, even within all your borders.

14 And I will carry you away with your enemies to a land you do not know; for fire is kindled in my anger, and it will burn upon you.

15 You, O Lord, know: remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors; do not take me away, in your longsuffering; know that for your sake I have suffered reproach.

16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of hosts.

17 I never sat in the assembly of mockers, nor did I rejoice; because of your hand I sat alone, for you filled me with indignation.

18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Are you to me like a deceptive brook, like waters that fail?

19 Therefore thus says the Lord: If you return, then I will restore you, and you shall stand before me; And if you separate the precious from the vile, you will be like my mouth; let them return to you, but you must not return to them.

20 And I will make you a fortified wall of bronze against this people; they will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you to protect you and deliver you from them, declares the Lord.

21 And I will rescue you from the hand of the wicked, and I will deliver you from the hand of the strong.

1 Disse-me porém o Senhor: Ainda que Moisés e Samuel se pusessem diante de mim, não seria a minha alma com este povo: lança-os de diante da minha face, e saiam.

2 E será que, quando te disserem: Para onde iremos? Dir-lhes-ás: Assim diz o Senhor: Os que para morte, para morte; e os que para espada, para a espada; e os que para a fome, para a fome; e os que para o cativeiro, para o cativeiro.

3 Porque os visitarei com quatro gêneros de males, diz o Senhor: com espada para matar, e com cães, para os arrastarem, e com as aves dos céus e os animais da terra, para os devorarem e destruírem.

4 Entregá-los-ei ao desterro em todos os reinos da terra; por causa de Manassés, filho de Ezequias, rei de Judá, por tudo quanto fez em Jerusalém.

5 Porque quem se compadeceria de ti, ó Jerusalém? Ou quem se entristeceria por ti? Ou quem se desviaria a perguntar pela tua paz?

6 Tu me deixaste, diz o Senhor, voltaste para trás; por isso estenderei a minha mão contra ti, e te destruirei; estou cansado de me arrepender.

7 E padejá-los-ei com a pá nas portas da terra: desfilhei, destruí o meu povo; não voltaram dos seus caminhos.

8 As suas viúvas mais se multiplicaram do que as areias dos mares; trouxe ao meio dia um destruidor sobre a mãe dos mancebos; fiz que caísse de repente sobre ela, e enchesse a cidade de terrores.

9 A quem dava à luz sete se enfraqueceu; expirou a sua alma; pôs-se o seu sol sendo ainda de dia; ela confundiu-se, e envergonhou-se: e os que ficarem dela eu os entregarei à espada, diante dos seus inimigos, diz o Senhor.

10 Ai de mim, minha mãe! Por que me deste à luz homem de rixa e homem de contendas para toda a terra? Nunca lhes emprestei com usura, nem eles me emprestaram a mim com usura, e todavia cada um deles me amaldiçoa.

11 Disse o Senhor: Decerto que te fortalecerei para bem, e, no tempo da calamidade e no tempo da angústia, farei que o inimigo te dirija súplicas.

12 Pode alguém quebrar o ferro, o ferro do norte, ou o aço?

13 A tua fazenda e os teus tesouros entregarei sem preço ao saque; e isso por todos os teus pecados, mesmo em todos os teus limites.

14 E levar-te-ei com os teus inimigos para a terra que não conheces; porque o fogo se acendeu em minha ira, e sobre vós arderá.

15 Tu, ó Senhor, o sabes: lembra-te de mim, e visita-me, e vinga-me dos meus perseguidores: não me arrebates, por tua longanimidade: sabe que por amor de ti tenho sofrido afronta.

16 Achando-se as tuas palavras, logo as comi, e a tua palavra foi para mim o gozo e alegria do meu coração; porque pelo teu nome me chamo, ó Senhor, Deus dos Exércitos.

17 Nunca me assentei no congresso dos zombadores, nem me regozijei; por causa da tua mão me assentei solitário: pois me encheste de indignação.

18 Por que dura a minha dor continuamente, e a minha ferida me dói, e não admite cura? Serias tu para mim como ilusório ribeiro e como águas inconstantes?

19 Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Se tu voltares, então te trarei, e estarás diante de minha face; e se apartares o precioso do vil, serás como a minha boca; tornem-se eles para ti, mas não voltes tu para eles.

20 E eu te porei contra este povo como forte muro de bronze; e pelejarão contra ti, mas não prevalecerão contra ti: porque eu sou contigo para te guardar, para te livrar deles, diz o Senhor.

21 E arrebatar-te-ei da mão dos malignos, e livrar-te-ei da mão dos fortes.

1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the great drought.

2 Judah mourns, and her gates languish; they mourn down to the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.

3 Even her nobles send their little ones to fetch water; they return with empty pitchers; they are ashamed and confounded, and cover their heads.

4 Because the ground is cracked open, for there is no rain on the land, the farmers are ashamed and cover their heads.

5 For even the hinds in the field give birth and abandon their young, because there is no grass.

6 Even the wild donkeys stand on the high places; they pant for air like dragons; their eyes fail because there is no grass. 

7 Though our iniquities testify against us, O Lord, act for the sake of your name; for our rebellions are many; we have sinned against you.

8 O hope of Israel, and its Redeemer in the time of trouble! Why should you be like a stranger in the land? And like a traveler who stays only for the night?

9 Why should you be like a weary man, like a mighty man who cannot deliver? But you are in our midst, O Lord, and we are called by your name; do not forsake us.

10 Thus says the Lord concerning this people: Because they have loved to turn away, and have not restrained their feet, therefore the Lord does not delight in them; but now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.

11 Then the Lord said to me: Do not pray for the good of this people.

12 When they fast, I will not listen to their cry; when they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will consume them by the sword, famine, and plague.

13 Then I said, “Ah, Lord, Lord! Behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you true peace in this place.’”

14 And the Lord said to me, “The prophets prophesy falsely in my name. I have not sent them, nor have I commanded them, nor have I spoken to them. They are prophesying false visions and divinations to you.”

15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, though I did not send them, and say, ‘Neither sword nor famine shall come to this land’: Those prophets shall be consumed by the sword and by famine.

16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword; And there will be no one to bury their wives, their sons, and their daughters; thus I will pour out their wickedness upon them.

17 Therefore you shall say this word to them: Let my eyes overflow with tears night and day, and let them not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people is wounded with a great wound, with a very grievous sore.

18 If I go out into the field, behold, those slain by the sword; and if I enter the city, there are those weakened by famine; even the prophets and the priests have run about the land, and they know nothing.

19 Have you utterly rejected Judah? Or does your soul abhor Zion? Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We look for peace, but no good comes; and for a time of healing, but behold, turmoil.

20 Ah, Lord! We acknowledge our wickedness and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against you.

21 Do not reject us for the sake of your name; do not bring down the throne of your glory; remember, and do not break your covenant with us.

22 Is there any among the idols of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Is it not you alone, O Lord our God? Therefore we put our trust in you, for you do all these things.

16 E o povo a quem eles profetizam será lançado nas ruas de Jerusalém, por causa da fome e da espada; e não haverá quem enterre as suas mulheres, e os seus filhos e as suas filhas: assim derramarei sobre eles a sua maldade.

17 Portanto lhes dirás esta palavra: Os meus olhos derramem lágrimas de noite e de dia, e não cessem porque a virgem, filha do meu povo, está ferida de grande ferida, de chaga mui dolorosa.

1 Thus the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not put it in water.”

2 So I bought the belt, according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist.

3 Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying:

4 “Take the belt that you bought and are wearing around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.”

5 So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord had commanded me.

6 After many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates and get the belt that I commanded you to hide there.”

7 Then I went to the Euphrates and dug, and took the belt from the place where I had hidden it; and behold, the belt had rotted and was good for nothing.

8 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

9 Thus says the Lord: In the same way I will rot the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.

10 This wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who walk according to the stubbornness of their hearts, and go after other gods to serve them and bow down to them, will be like this belt, which is good for nothing.

11 For as a belt is fastened to the loins of a man, so I bound to myself the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, says the Lord, to be my people, and my name, and my praise, and my glory; but they did not listen.

12 Therefore, tell them this word: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Every wineskin shall be filled with wine. And they shall say to you, “Do we not know very well that every wineskin shall be filled with wine?”

13 But you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land, and the kings of the line of David who sit on their thrones, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

14 And I will dash them to pieces, one against another, and fathers with sons together, says the Lord; I will not spare nor have pity, nor will I have compassion on them, that I may not destroy them.

15 Hear, and incline your ears; do not be proud, for the Lord has spoken.

16 Give glory to the Lord your God before darkness comes, before your feet stumble on the dark mountains; Before, hoping for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and reduces it to darkness.

6 Sucedeu pois, ao cabo de muitos dias, que me disse o Senhor: Levanta-te, vai ao Eufrates, e toma dali o cinto que te ordenei que escondesses ali.

7 E fui ao Eufrates, e cavei, e tomei o cinto do lugar onde o havia escondido: e eis que o cinto tinha apodrecido, e para nada prestava.

8 Então veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

9 Assim diz o Senhor: Do mesmo modo farei apodrecer a soberba de Judá e a muita soberba de Jerusalém.

15 और ऐसा होगा कि जब मैं उन्हें उखाड़ दूँगा, तो मैं वापस आऊँगा और उन पर दया करूँगा, और मैं उन्हें हर एक को उसकी विरासत और उसकी ज़मीन पर वापस ले जाऊँगा।

16 और ऐसा होगा कि अगर वे मेरे लोगों के तौर-तरीके ध्यान से सीखेंगे, मेरे नाम की कसम खाएँगे, 'जैसा यहोवा जीवित है,' जैसे उन्होंने मेरे लोगों को बाल की कसम खाना सिखाया था, तो वे मेरे लोगों के बीच बस जाएँगे।

17 लेकिन अगर वे सुनने से मना करते हैं, तो मैं उस देश को पूरी तरह से उखाड़कर खत्म कर दूँगा, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।
