1 Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.

2 Share it with seven, and even with eight, for you do not know what disaster will come upon the earth.

3 When the clouds are full, they pour rain on the earth, and whether a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.

4 Whoever watches the wind will not sow, and whoever regards the clouds will not reap.

5 Just as you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a pregnant woman's womb, so you do not know the works of God, who makes all things.

6 In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both will be good alike. 

7 Truly the light is sweet, and it is pleasant to the eyes to see the sun.

8 But if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all, he should also remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. All that happens is vanity.

9 Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

10 Therefore remove anger from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for youth and youth are vanity.

1 Lança o teu pão sobre as águas, porque depois de muitos dias o acharás.

2 Reparte com sete, e ainda até com oito, porque não sabes que mal haverá sobre a terra.

3 Estando as nuvens cheias, derramam a chuva sobre a terra, e caindo a árvore para o sul, ou para o norte, no lugar em que a árvore cair ali ficará.

4 Quem observa o vento, nunca semeará, e o que olha para as nuvens nunca segará.

5 Assim como tu não sabes qual o caminho do vento, nem como se formam os ossos no ventre da que está grávida, assim também não sabes as obras de Deus, que faz todas as coisas.

6Pela manhã semeia a tua semente, e à tarde não retires a tua mão, porque tu não sabes qual prosperará: se esta, se aquela, ou se ambas igualmente serão boas.

7 Verdadeiramente suave é a luz, e agradável é aos olhos ver o sol.

8 Mas se o homem viver muitos anos, e em todos eles se alegrar, também se deve lembrar dos dias das trevas, porque hão de ser muitos. Tudo quanto sucede é vaidade.

9 Alegra-te, mancebo, na tua mocidade, e recreie-se o teu coração nos dias da tua mocidade, e anda pelos caminhos do teu coração, e pela vista dos teus olhos: sabe porém que por todas estas coisas te trará Deus a juízo.

10 Afasta pois a ira do teu coração, e remove da tua carne o mal, porque a adolescência e a juventude são vaidade.

1 जैसे मरी हुई मक्खी दुर्गंध फैलाती है और इत्र बनाने वाले के इत्र को बिगाड़ देती है, वैसे ही थोड़ी सी मूर्खता बुद्धि और सम्मान के लिए प्रसिद्ध व्यक्ति के लिए होती है।

2 बुद्धिमान का हृदय उसके दाहिने हाथ में होता है, परन्तु मूर्ख का हृदय उसके बाएँ हाथ में होता है।

3 मूर्ख जब मार्ग पर चलता है, तब भी वह समझ से रहित होता है और सब से कहता है कि वह मूर्ख है।

10 यदि लोहा कुंद हो और उसकी धार तेज़ न हो, तो अधिक बल लगाना पड़ता है; परन्तु मार्गदर्शन के लिए बुद्धि उत्तम है।

11 यदि साँप मंत्र से पहले ही डस ले, तो कुशल मंत्र से भी कोई उपाय नहीं मिलेगा।

12 बुद्धिमान के वचन अनुग्रह से भरे होते हैं, परन्तु मूर्ख के होंठ उसे निगल जाते हैं।

13 उसके मुँह के वचनों का आरम्भ मूर्खता से होता है, और उसकी बातों का अन्त दुष्टतापूर्ण पागलपन से होता है।

14 मूर्ख चाहे बहुत बातें करे, तौभी वह नहीं जानता कि क्या होगा; और कौन उसे बता सकता है कि उसके बाद क्या होगा?

15 मूर्खों का परिश्रम उनमें से हर एक को थका देता है, क्योंकि वे नहीं जानते कि नगर तक कैसे पहुँचें। 

16 हे देश, तुझ पर हाय, जिसका राजा बालक है, और जिसके हाकिम भोर को भोजन करते हैं!

17 हे देश, तू धन्य है, जिसका राजा कुलीनों का है, और जिसके हाकिम समय पर भोजन करते हैं, बल के लिए, न कि पियक्कड़पन के लिए!

Folly is the cause of many misfortunes

1 Just as a dead fly causes a stench and spoils the perfumer's ointment, so a little folly is to one renowned for wisdom and honor.

2 The heart of the wise is at his right hand, but the heart of the fool is at his left.

3 Even when a fool walks along the path, he lacks understanding and says to everyone that he is a fool.

4 If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for agreement is a remedy that covers great sins.

5 There is another evil that I have seen under the sun: error from a ruler.

6 They seat a fool in high places, but the rich sit in low places.

7 I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking like servants on the earth. 

8 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a snake.

9 Whoever carries stones will be harmed by them, and whoever chops wood will be in danger.

10 If iron is blunt and the edge is not whetted, then more strength must be exerted; but wisdom is excellent for guidance.

11 If a snake bites before it is charmed, then no remedy will be found in the most skillful charmer.

12 In the words of a wise man's mouth there is favor, but a fool's lips will devour him.

13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is folly, and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14 Though a fool multiplies words, a man does not know what will happen; and who can tell him what will happen after him?

15 The labor of fools wearies every one of them, for they do not know how to get to the city. 

16 Woe to you, O land, whose king is a child, and whose princes eat in the morning!

17 Blessed are you, O land, whose king is the sons of nobles, and whose princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18 Through much laziness the roof weakens, and through slack hands the house leaks.

19 Invitations are made for laughter, and wine makes life merry, and money answers for everything.

20 Do not curse the king in your thoughts, nor curse the rich in your inner chambers, for the birds of the air would carry the voice, and what has wings would tell the word.

1 Assim como a mosca morta faz exalar mau cheiro e inutilizar o ungüento do perfumador, assim é para o famoso em sabedoria e em honra uma pouca de estultícia.

2 O coração do sábio está à sua mão direita mas o coração do tolo está à sua esquerda.

3 E, até quando o tolo vai pelo caminho, lhe falta entendimento e diz a todos que é tolo.

4 Levantando-se contra ti o espírito do governador, não deixes o teu lugar, porque o acordo é um remédio que aquieta grandes pecados.

5 Ainda há um mal que vi debaixo do sol, como o erro que procede do governador.

6 Ao tolo assentam-no em grandes alturas, mas os ricos estão assentados em lugar baixo.

7 Vi os servos a cavalo, e os príncipes que andavam a pé como servos sobre a terra.

8 Quem fizer uma cova cairá nela, e, quem romper um muro, uma cobra o morderá.

9 Quem acarretar pedras, será maltratado por elas, e o que rachar lenha expõe-se ao perigo.

10 Se estiver embotado o ferro, e não se afiar o corte, então se devem pôr mais forças; mas a sabedoria é excelente para dirigir.

11 Se a cobra morder antes de estar encantada, então remédio nenhum haverá no mais hábil encantador.

12 Nas palavras da boca do sábio há favor, mas os lábios do tolo o devoram.

13 O princípio das palavras da sua boca é a estultícia, e o fim da sua boca um desvario péssimo.

14 Bem que o tolo multiplique as palavras, não sabe o homem o que será; e quem lhe fará saber o que será depois dele?

15 O trabalho dos tolos a cada um deles fatiga, pois não sabem como ir à cidade.

16 Ai de ti, ó terra, cujo rei é criança, e cujos príncipes comem de manhã.

17 Bem-aventurado tu, ó terra, cujo rei é filhos dos nobres, e cujos príncipes comem a tempo, para refazerem as forças, e não para bebedice.

18 Pela muita preguiça se enfraquece o teto, e pela frouxidão das mãos goteja a casa.

19 Para rir se fazem convites, e o vinho alegra a vida, e por tudo o dinheiro responde.

20 Nem ainda no teu pensamento amaldiçoes ao rei, nem tampouco no mais interior da tua recâmara amaldiçoes ao rico: porque as aves dos céus levariam a voz, e o que tem asas daria notícia da palavra.

12 क्योंकि मनुष्य भी अपने समय को नहीं जानता। जैसे मछलियाँ दुष्ट जाल में फँस जाती हैं, या पक्षी फंदे में फँस जाते हैं, वैसे ही मनुष्य बुरे मौसम में फँस जाते हैं, जब वह अचानक उन पर आ पड़ता है।

13 मैंने धरती पर बुद्धि भी देखी, और वह मेरे लिए महान थी:

14 एक छोटा सा नगर था, और उसमें थोड़े ही लोग थे; और एक बड़ा राजा उसके विरुद्ध आया, और उसे घेर लिया, और उसके विरुद्ध बड़ी-बड़ी घेराबंदी की।

15 वहाँ एक गरीब बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति रहता था, और उसने अपनी बुद्धि से उस नगर को बचाया; और किसी ने उस गरीब व्यक्ति को याद नहीं किया।

11 I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the mighty, nor yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to the discerning, nor yet favor to men of understanding; but that time and chance belong to them all.

12 For man also does not know his time. Like fish caught in a wicked net, or like birds caught in a snare, so are the sons of men snared in evil weather, when it suddenly falls upon them.

13 I also saw wisdom under the sun, and it was great to me:

14 There was a small city, and there were few people in it; and a great king came against it and besieged it, and built great sieges against it.

15 And there lived a poor wise man, and he delivered that city by his wisdom; and no one remembered that poor man. 

16 Then I said, "Wisdom is better than strength." Yet the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 The words of the wise are better heard in silence than the clamor of one who rules over fools.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

11 Voltei-me, e vi debaixo do sol que não é dos ligeiros a carreira, nem dos valentes a peleja, nem tampouco dos sábios o pão, nem ainda dos prudentes a riqueza nem dos entendidos o favor, mas que o tempo e a sorte pertencem a todos.

12 Que também o homem não conhece o seu tempo; como os peixes que se pescam com a rede maligna, e como os passarinhos que se prendem com o laço, assim se enlaçam também os filhos dos homens no mau tempo, quando cai de repente sobre eles.

13 Também vi sabedoria debaixo do sol, que foi para mim grande:

14 Houve uma pequena cidade em que havia poucos homens, e veio contra ela um grande rei, e a cercou e levantou contra ela grandes tranqueiras:

15 E vivia nela um sábio pobre, que livrou aquela cidade pela sua sabedoria, e ninguém se lembrava daquele pobre homem.

16 Então disse eu: Melhor é a sabedoria do que a força, ainda que a sabedoria do pobre foi desprezada, e as suas palavras não foram ouvidas.

17 As palavras dos sábios devem em silêncio ser ouvidas, mais do que o clamor do que domina sobre os tolos.

18 Melhor é a sabedoria do que as armas de guerra, mas um só pecador destrói muitos bens.

1 मैंने इन सब बातों को अपने मन में इस प्रकार रखा है कि मैं इन्हें स्पष्ट रूप से समझ सकूँ: कि धर्मी और बुद्धिमान, और उनके काम, परमेश्वर के हाथ में हैं, और मनुष्य न तो प्रेम जानता है और न ही घृणा; सब कुछ उसके सामने से गुजरता है।

2 सब कुछ सबके साथ एक जैसा होता है; धर्मी और दुष्ट के साथ भी ऐसा ही होता है; अच्छे और शुद्ध के साथ-साथ अशुद्ध के साथ भी; बलिदान करने वाले के साथ-साथ बलिदान न करने वाले के साथ भी; अच्छे के साथ-साथ पापी के साथ भी; शपथ खाने वाले के साथ-साथ शपथ से डरने वाले के साथ भी।

5 क्योंकि जीवित तो जानते हैं कि वे मरेंगे, परन्तु मरे हुए कुछ भी नहीं जानते, और न उनको कुछ और बदला मिल सकता है, क्योंकि उनका स्मरण मिट गया है।

6 उनका प्रेम, उनका बैर और उनकी डाह नाश हो चुकी है, और जो कुछ सूर्य के नीचे किया जाता है, उसमें उनका कोई भाग नहीं।

7 जा, आनन्द से अपनी रोटी खा, और मन में सुख से अपना दाखमधु पी, क्योंकि परमेश्वर ने तेरे कामों को ग्रहण कर लिया है।

8 तेरे वस्त्र सदा उजले रहें, और तेरे सिर पर तेल की घटी न हो।

The same things happen to the righteous and the unrighteous. Let us enjoy the good things God gives.

1 I have turned all these things over in my heart, that I may understand it clearly: that the righteous and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God, and that man knows neither love nor hate; everything passes before his face.

2 Everything happens alike to everyone; the same happens to the righteous and the wicked; to the good and the clean as well as to the unclean; to the one who sacrifices as well as to the one who does not sacrifice; to the good as well as to the sinner; to the one who swears as to the one who fears an oath.

3 This is the evil that is in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all; that the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; that madness is in their hearts even in their lifetime, and that afterward they go to the dead. 

4 Now there is hope for him who keeps company with all the living, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them has been forgotten.

6 Their love, their hatred, and their envy have already perished, and they have no more share in anything that is done under the sun.

7 Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already accepted your works.

8 Let your clothing be white at all times, and let oil not be lacking on your head.

9 Live with the wife you love all the days of your vain life, which God has given you under the sun, all the days of your vanity; for this is your portion in life and in your labor that you have done under the sun. 

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

1 Deveras revolvi todas estas coisas no meu coração, para claramente entender tudo isto: que os justos, e os sábios, e as suas obras, estão nas mãos de Deus, e também que o homem não conhece nem o amor nem o ódio; tudo passa perante a sua face.

2 Tudo sucede igualmente a todos; o mesmo sucede ao justo e ao ímpio: ao bom e ao puro, como ao impuro; assim ao que sacrifica como ao que não sacrifica: assim ao bom como ao pecador; ao que jura como ao que teme o juramento.

3 Este é o mal que há entre tudo quanto se faz debaixo do sol: que a todos sucede o mesmo; que também o coração dos filhos dos homens está cheio de maldade; que há desvarios no seu coração, na sua vida, e que depois se vão aos mortos.

4 Ora, para o que acompanha com todos os vivos há esperança (porque melhor é o cão vivo do que o leão morto).

5 Porque os vivos sabem que hão de morrer, mas os mortos não sabem coisa nenhuma, nem tampouco eles têm jamais recompensa, mas a sua memória ficou entregue ao esquecimento.

6 Até o seu amor, o seu ódio, e a sua inveja já pereceram, e já não têm parte alguma neste século, em coisa alguma do que se faz debaixo do sol.

7 Vai pois come com alegria o teu pão e bebe com bom coração o teu vinho, pois já Deus se agrada das tuas obras.

8 Em todo o tempo sejam alvos os teus vestidos, e nunca falte o óleo sobre a tua cabeça.

9 Goza a vida com a mulher que amas, todos os dias de vida da tua vaidade, os quais Deus te deu debaixo do sol, todos os dias da tua vaidade: porque esta é a tua porção nesta vida, e do teu trabalho, que tu fizeste debaixo do sol.

10 Tudo quanto te vier à mão para fazer, faze-o conforme as tuas forças, porque na sepultura, para onde tu vais, não há obra, nem indústria, nem ciência, nem sabedoria alguma.

11 क्योंकि बुरे काम का न्याय शीघ्र नहीं होता, इसलिए मनुष्यों का मन बुराई करने के लिए पूरी तरह से तैयार रहता है।

12 चाहे पापी सौ बार भी बुरा करे, और उसके दिन बढ़ जाएँ, तौभी मैं निश्चय जानता हूँ कि जो लोग परमेश्वर का भय मानते हैं, और उसके सम्मुख भय मानते हैं, उनका भला होगा।

13 परन्तु दुष्ट का भला नहीं होगा, न ही उसके दिन बढ़ेंगे; वह छाया के समान होगा, क्योंकि वह परमेश्वर का भय नहीं मानता।

14 एक और व्यर्थ काम जो पृथ्वी पर होता है: कुछ धर्मी लोग हैं जिन्हें दुष्टों के कर्मों के अनुसार फल मिलता है, और कुछ दुष्ट लोग हैं जिन्हें धर्मियों के कर्मों के अनुसार फल मिलता है। मैं कहता हूँ कि यह भी व्यर्थ है।

11 Because judgment against an evil deed is not executed speedily, therefore the hearts of the sons of men are fully set in them to do evil.

12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I know for sure that it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before him.

13 But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days; he will be like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.

14 Another vanity that is done on earth: There are righteous people who are rewarded according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people who are rewarded according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this also is vanity. 

15 Then I extolled joy, for a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat and drink and be merry, for this will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life, which God gives him under the sun.

16 I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the work that is on the earth (for man sees neither day nor night sleep in his eyes).

17 Then I saw all the work of God, that no man can find out what is done under the sun. No matter how hard a man toils to seek it, he will not find it. And though a wise man says he will know it, he will not be able to find it.

11 Visto como se não executa logo o juízo sobre a má obra, por isso o coração dos filhos dos homens está inteiramente disposto para praticar o mal.

12 Ainda que o pecador faça mal, cem vezes, e os dias se lhe prolonguem, eu sei com certeza que bem sucede aos que temem a Deus, aos que temerem diante dele.

13 Mas o ímpio não irá bem, e ele não prolongará os seus dias; será como a sombra, visto que ele não teme diante de Deus.

14 Ainda a outra vaidade que se faz sobre a terra: Há justos a quem sucede segundo as obras dos ímpios, e há ímpios a quem sucede segundo as obras dos justos. Digo que também isto é vaidade.

15 Então exaltei eu a alegria, porquanto o homem nenhuma coisa melhor tem debaixo do sol do que comer, beber e alegrar-se; porque isso o acompanhará no seu trabalho nos dias da sua vida que Deus lhe dá debaixo do sol.

16 Aplicando eu o meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria, e a ver o trabalho que há sobre a terra (pois nem de dia nem de noite vê o homem sono nos seus olhos);

17 Então vi toda a obra de Deus, que o homem não pode alcançar a obra que se faz debaixo do sol; por mais que trabalhe o homem para a buscar, não a achará; e ainda que diga o sábio que a virá a conhecer, nem por isso a poderá alcançar.

1 Who is like a wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a matter? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

2 I say: Keep the king's commandment, and this in consideration of God's oath.

3 Do not be hasty to go out from his presence, nor persist in any evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him.

4 For the king's word has power, and who will say to him, 'What are you doing?'

5 Whoever keeps the commandment will experience no evil; and a wise man's heart discerns the time and the way.

6 For to every purpose there is a time and a way, because the evil of a man is great upon him.

7 For he does not know what will happen; and how it will happen, who can tell him?

8 No man has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; You have no power on the day of death; there is no weapon in this battle; nor will wickedness deliver the wicked.

9 All this I saw when I applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: there is a time when one man has dominion over another, to his own misfortune.

1 Quem é como o sábio? E quem sabe a interpretação das coisas? A sabedoria do homem faz brilhar o seu rosto, e a dureza do seu rosto se muda.

2 Eu digo: Observa o mandamento do rei, e isso em consideração para com o juramento de Deus.

3 Não te apresses a sair da presença dele, nem persistas em alguma coisa má, porque ele faz tudo o que quer.

4 Porque a palavra do rei tem poder, e quem lhe dirá: Que fazes?

5 Quem guardar o mandamento não experimentará nenhum mal; e o coração do sábio discernirá o tempo e o modo.

6 Porque para todo o propósito há tempo e modo; porquanto o mal do homem é grande sobre ele.

7 Porque não sabe o que há de suceder: e, como haja de suceder, quem lho dará a entender?

8 Nenhum homem há que tenha domínio sobre o espírito, para reter o espírito; nem podes sobre o dia da morte; nem há armas nesta peleja: nem tampouco a impiedade livrará aos ímpios.

9 Tudo isto vi quando apliquei o meu coração a toda a obra que se faz debaixo do sol: tempo há em que um homem tem domínio sobre outro homem, para desgraça sua.

10 Assim também vi os ímpios sepultados, e eis que havia quem fosse à sua sepultura, e os que fizeram bem e saíam do lugar santo, foram esquecidos na cidade: também isto é vaidade.

1 अच्छा नाम अनमोल इत्र से और मृत्यु का दिन जन्म के दिन से उत्तम है।

2 शोक के घर जाना भोज के घर जाने से उत्तम है, क्योंकि सब मनुष्यों का अन्त दिखाई देता है; और जीवित लोग उसे मन में रखते हैं।

3 शोक हँसी से उत्तम है, क्योंकि उदास मुख से मन प्रसन्न होता है।

10 यह कभी न कहना, “बीते दिन इन दिनों से क्यों अच्छे थे?” क्योंकि तुम यह कभी बुद्धिमानी से नहीं पूछोगे।

1 A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for there is seen the end of all men; and the living take it to heart.

3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for by a sad countenance the heart is made better.

4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5 It is better to hear the rebuke of a wise man than to listen to the song of a fool.

6 For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of a fool; this also is vanity.

7 Surely oppression makes even a wise man mad, and a bribe corrupts the heart. 

8 The end of a thing is better than its beginning; he who is slow to anger is better than he who is proud in heart.

9 Do not be hasty in your spirit to anger, for anger lurks in the bosom of fools.

10 Never say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you would never ask this wisely.

11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, and those who see the sun profit from it.

12 For wisdom serves as a shadow, as money serves as a shadow; but the excellence of wisdom is that it gives life to its possessor.

13 Consider the work of God; for who can straighten what he has made crooked?

14 In the day of prosperity enjoy good, but in the day of adversity consider; for God has also made this contrary to that, so that man should not find anything that should come after him.

15 All this I saw in the days of my vanity; There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his days in his wickedness.

16 Do not be overly righteous, nor overly wise: why would you destroy yourself?

17 Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish: why would you die before your time?

18 It is good that you hold fast this, and do not withdraw your hand from it, for whoever fears God will escape all this.

19 Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten rulers in a city.

20 For there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

21 Do not take to heart every word that is spoken, lest you hear that your servant curses you.

22 For your heart has also often confessed that you have cursed others. 

23 All this I inquired of with wisdom; and I said, "I will acquire wisdom," but it was still far from me.

24 What was once is far off, and deep; who can find it?

25 I turned again, and set my heart to know, and to inquire, and to seek wisdom and reason, and to know the folly of wickedness and the madness of madness.

26 And I found something more bitter than death, the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are bands: whoever is good before God will escape her, but the sinner will be taken by her.

27 Behold, this I have found, says the preacher, weighing one thing with another to find the cause;

28 My soul still seeks the cause, but I have not found it; a man among a thousand I have found, but a woman among all these I have not found. 

29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright: but they have sought out many inventions.

1 Melhor é a boa fama do que o melhor ungüento, e o dia da morte do que o dia do nascimento de alguém.

2 Melhor é ir à casa onde há luto do que ir à casa onde há banquete, porque ali se vê o fim de todos os homens; e os vivos o aplicam ao seu coração.

3 Melhor é a tristeza do que o riso, porque com a tristeza do rosto se faz melhor o coração.

4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos na casa da alegria.

5 Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio, do que ouvir alguém a canção do tolo.

6 Porque qual o crepitar dos espinhos debaixo duma panela, tal é o riso do tolo: também isto é vaidade.

7 Verdadeiramente a opressão faz endoidecer até o sábio, e a peita corrompe o coração.

8 Melhor é o fim das coisas do que o princípio delas: melhor é o longânimo do que o altivo de coração.

9 Não te apresses no teu espírito a irar-te, porque a ira abriga-se no seio dos tolos.

10 Nunca digas: Por que foram os dias passados melhores do que estes? Porque nunca com sabedoria isto perguntarias.

11 Tão boa é a sabedoria como a herança, e dela tiram proveito os que vêem o sol.

12 Porque a sabedoria serve de sombra, como de sombra serve o dinheiro; mas a excelência da sabedoria é que ela dá vida ao seu possuidor.

13 Atenta para a obra de Deus; porque quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto?

14 No dia da prosperidade goza do bem, mas no dia da adversidade considera; porque também Deus fez a este em oposição àquele, para que o homem nada ache que tenha de vir depois dele.

15 Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade; há um justo que perece na sua justiça, e há um ímpio que prolonga os seus dias na sua maldade.

16 Não sejas demasiadamente justo, nem demasiadamente sábio: por que te destruirias a ti mesmo?

17 Não sejas demasiadamente ímpio, nem sejas louco: por que morrerias fora de teu tempo?

18 Bom é que retenhas isto, e também disto não retires a tua mão; porque quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isto.

19 A sabedoria fortalece ao sábio, mais do que dez governadores que haja na cidade.

20 Na verdade, que não há homem justo sobre a terra, que faça bem, e nunca peque.

21 Tampouco apliques o teu coração a todas as palavras que se disserem, para que não venhas a ouvir que o teu servo te amaldiçoa.

22 Porque o teu coração também já confessou muitas vezes que tu amaldiçoou a outros.

23 Tudo isto inquiri com sabedoria; e disse: Sabedoria adquirirei; mas ela ainda estava longe de mim.

24 Longe está o que foi, e profundíssimo; quem o achará?

25 Eu tornei a voltar-me, e determinei em meu coração saber, e inquirir, e buscar a sabedoria e a razão, e conhecer a loucura da impiedade e a doidice dos desvarios.

26 E eu achei uma coisa mais amarga do que a morte, a mulher cujo coração são redes e laços, e cujas mãos são ataduras: quem for bom diante de Deus escapará dela, mas o pecador virá a ser preso por ela.

27 Vedes aqui, isto achei diz o pregador, conferindo uma coisa com a outra para achar a causa;

28 Causa que a minha alma ainda busca, mas não a achei; um homem entre mil achei eu, mas uma mulher entre todas estas não achei.

29 Vede, isto tão-somente achei: que Deus fez ao homem reto, mas eles buscaram muitas invenções.
