The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 12
You would be righteous, O Lord, even if I were to contend with you in court; yet I will speak with you about your judgments. Why does the way of the wicked prosper, and why do all the treacherous do evil?
You planted them, and they took root; they grow, they also bear fruit; you are near to their mouth, but far from their hearts.
But you, O Lord, know me; you see me, and you test my heart toward you; you drive them like sheep to the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
How long will the land mourn, and the grass of every field wither? Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it, the animals and the birds perish; because they say, “He will not see our end.”
If you have raced with men on foot and they have wearied you, how can you compete with horses? If you are only confident in a land of peace, what will you do in the flood of the Jordan?
For even your brothers and your father’s household have dealt treacherously with you; they themselves cry out after you with loud voices. Do not trust them, even though they speak good things to you.
